From Greenland’s glaciers to the shores of Nunatsiavut…

Finisterre Ambassador @lali.car joined @StudentsOnIce for her third year as a Zodiac driver and educator, sailing across the Davis Strait, through the Torngat Mountains and on to Iqaluit for the 2026 Inuit Circumpolar Council AGM.

Over 12 days, Ali worked with young people along a coastline shaped by glaciers and polar bears, exploring marine science, Inuit culture and climate innovation along the way.

For the last month or so there’s been an incredible plankton bloom, beautiful from the surface, but underwater visibility is down to maybe 20cm. Luckily the lake never lets us down in the summer. It’s also nice to leave behind the thick neoprene every now and then! by @lali.car

Friends, please meet Vanilla. My new board!
Why Vanilla? I'm glad you asked!

First, this board reminds me of the famous moment in the sunset when the sun peaks one last time, highlighting the clouds. Everything feels colorful, suspended, and softens into magic. The vanilla sky.

But this name carries more than light. It carries legacy.
It honors Edmond Albius, an enslaved teenager from Réunion Island who discovered how to hand-pollinate the vanilla orchid — a delicate flower that would otherwise rely on a rare natural process.
His hands made it possible for vanilla to be cultivated around the world. His brilliance turned it from wild to accessible.
So while “vanilla” is often wrongly coded as bland or white, it’s a flavour born of Black genius. A gift from a child who lived in chains.

So yes,
while we’ve learned to call pale things “vanilla”, let’s remember:
real vanilla is dark, rich, and complex.
It comes from Black brilliance, from forced labour, from a flower that only opens for one day.

Like vanilla, mid-lengths are often referred to as “basics”.
But they’re not.
They’re subtle. Complex. Generous.
They require you to observe and feel,
to flow,
to respect the rhythm of the wave.

And like that, this board becomes a quiet reminder for myself.
To hold stories differently.
To taste more deeply.
To ride in ways that don’t always perform.

Decolonize your surf.
Decolonize your food.
Decolonize your joy.

There’s more flavor here than we’ve been told.

🏄🏽‍♀️ Shout out to @hiddenvillage_surfcraft for creating great boards!

Oh, winter!

As we enter the final (and toughest) stretch of winter, remember to take care of yourself - mind and body.

✨ Get outside and breathe in the crisp air
🕯 Light some candles for cozy vibes
💬 Connect with friends and share a laugh
💃 Move, dance, and shake off the winter blues
🐾 Adopt two goofy huskies (highly recommended!)

And most importantly, smile! 😁

Happy summer solstice!
Happy Indigenous Peoples Day!

Just a reminder that the Land Back movement is not about kicking people out of their homes.
Ownership is a colonialism and capitalism construct.
Landback is about Indigenous Peoples reconnecting to the land.
Reclaiming that relationship.
Restoring self governance.
And ultimately, better stewardship.

After all, Indigenous Peoples currently steward 20% of the planet, which holds 80% of the earth's remaining biodiversity. by @lali.car

It's flower season!

Don't forget to take the time to appreciate them.
To smell them.
To feel their vibes.
To respect them.

And you, what did you wish for?

Celestial events like this are always a good reminder of how wonderful this planet is.
How lucky are we that while protecting us against hyperactive particules, Mama Earth is putting on a beautiful show.
Plus, we get to connect about a magnificent and positive phenomenon! How great is this?
