A big thanks to Eric Yarbrough and Mike Pabon, co-owners of La Même Chose wine shop, for sharing their story with me for The SOMM Journal. Wine was the catalyst for their friendship and ultimately led them to open La Même Chose in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Not only are Eric and Mike putting a spotlight on wines from around the globe, but they are also committed to creating a welcoming environment. “We created our own space—a space where people who look like us, who are potentially queer or people of color, can learn,” said Mike.

The dynamic duo has also co-authored a book, The Storyteller and the Sage: Exploring Wines of the World One Glass at a Time, to help customers navigate the diverse inventory and gently steer them away from reflexively buying the same thing (la même chose) time and again. “There are a lot of things that people are scared to drink that are really good,” explains Eric. “We were trying to figure out a way to introduce people to these wines without overwhelming them.”

Read the full article on page 30 of the February/March issue of The SOMM Journal. Subscriptions to the print edition are free to qualified beverage trade members.
