I left Nigeria when I was 14, and so when I go home, I sometimes feel like I’ve missed out on building a professional network for myself. Also, the solitary nature of being a writer means it’s difficult to build a network anywhere in the world. Which is why, whenever I get a chance to go to Lagos, I reach out to creatives I admire and say, ‘Please be my friend.’ And I’m always so moved by the openness and warmth with which I’m received. @nicolechikwe @lamide_a @nicoleasinugo and I talked about so much but my main take aways from the conversation were:

1. No matter where you live in the world, making money in the creative industry is hard. Sometimes the grass looks greener on the other side but the truth is, professional creativity is not for the faint hearted. If you want to do this kind of work, gird your loins.

2. Don’t isolate yourself. An isolated creative is more likely to get cheated. Make friends in the industry. Help each other. Share knowledge.

3. Down with the gatekeepers. What I love about the creative space in Nigeria is that often you can meet someone who started out in banking, but is now a script writer and is on their way to becoming a film director. Whereas in England, to this day, most creative industries have set paths to enter them. You have to have gone to certain schools, or studied on certain courses, or have the required certificates. And part of the reason why you go on these courses is so you can meet the ‘right people’ and network with them, and anybody outside this closed system has a really tough time breaking in.

Now there’s nothing wrong with studying. I’m all for it. But there’s also a place for learning on the job. And that’s why I love the Nigerian creative space. Someone has a passion for something and they say, ‘Right! I’ll try that. I’ll give that a go. I’ll take a chance on myself and hopefully, someone else will take a chance on me.’ And I just find that energy so invigorating and I want to make sure I carry it with me in England. Not to be intimidated by gate keepers but also not to be a gatekeeper myself.

…having a child and loosing my daddy weeks apart was not something I hoped for neither was I ready for it. But having a child is such a divine, selfless, high calling because another human being literally depends on you for their survival. And so in spite of whatever life throws at you, you have to brace up and be a parent, a mother, because this beautiful being whom you love beyond words needs you .

So, as I look back at this past one year of having Adéìyèolú in our lives, I look back with so much gratitude. Navigating building a career, grief, and being a new mum, breastfeeding, travelling and raising a 4 year old, is no joke, and I don’t mince words when I say it has taken a village.

For every member of my village (not all pictured), work colleagues who became family, who showed up, visited, came to do shifts so I could sleep, helped carry him so I could work or pump milk, stayed on the phone with me, checked in, sent gifts, sent messages, cheered , travelled, stayed on the phone, fed him, rocked him to sleep, prayed with me and for me - THIS 1st BIRTHDAY IS FOR ALL OF YOU TOO!! Our celebration is sweeter because we have you all.

And so today, we are grateful for the gift of Adéìyèolú Monoyooritse Chioke Ayanfe (aka A.D.B, aka Jagzzz, )we are grateful for his belly laughs, his pout, his LOVE FOR FOOD, and most importantly for the privilege and honour to be his parents. He has expanded our hearts and increased our joy.

I’m also grateful for the most understanding baby, from being in set with me in my first and second trimesters, to hoping on planes with me from as young as 4 weeks old, and still going to work with me when necessary. Such a trooper!!!

Love how gracefully @lamide_a carried conversations across the very first panel in the physical launch of the Safety in the [Legal] Workplace initiative.

The title of the panel was: The Role of Educational Institutions & Professional Bodies in Laying the Foundation.

Looking forward to reliving these conversations? Click on the link in bio to subscribe to our YouTube channel, we have something exciting coming up 😀!
