Here's something many people don't know about The Baxter: every March, it stops being Cape Town's fanciest theatre and becomes something else entirely.

PICK OF THE WEEKEND: The 2026 Zabalaza Festival!

For ten days, the whole building transforms. Multiple shows daily. Tickets cost what you'd spend on a takeaway coffee. And the stories? They're the ones that don't usually get told.

This is Zabalaza.

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS

For 16 years, Zabalaza has been finding theatre makers from townships and towns across the Western Cape - Khayelitsha, Langa, Delft, Robertson, Stellenbosch - and giving them what most never get: a professional stage, mentorship, and audiences who actually show up.

Productions start in community mini-festivals. The best ones get developed. Then they land at The Baxter. Door takings go straight to the artists. Winners get published. Some participants end up on 7de Laan and Suidooster.

It's not charity theatre. It's good theatre that happens to cost R40.

THIS YEAR'S SHOWS

The Battered Housewives' Club - Five women, weekly meetings, confronting domestic violence together

Bring Light - 15-year-old Zanokhanyo navigating poverty, violence, and first love in a Cape Town township

Becoming - Identity and transformation laid bare

Behind the Frame - Multilingual production examining what we hide beneath surfaces

Plus more!

Best of the Fest Awards: 21 March

THE ZABALAZA CHALLENGE

The Baxter is encouraging the additional purchase of those well priced tickets - aiming to distribute them to learners and communities who would not otherwise be able to afford theatre tickets. What an amazing incentive! #takeachildtothetheatre
