POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

LAMMPING is a Toronto based duo born from a meeting between two musicians who shared a deep interest in the world of sampling. Mikhail, an experienced beat maker, connected with a fellow musician who had long wanted to bring drumming into a hip-hop context. That shared curiosity led them to spend time experimenting together, gradually discovering that their combination had something worth developing. Since then, LAMMPING have expanded beyond a single format, releasing albums, EPs, and collaborative projects with other musicians.

All of that journey now comes together on So What, What ?, an album they see as the fullest representation of LAMMPING at their best. Rather than simply a collection of songs, the record is designed as a continuous sonic journey with the feel of a mixtape—moving from one section to the next without giving listeners much reason to hit skip. They approached the album as their “main event,” putting their full creative ability into every detail while leaving plenty of room for experimentation and unexpected sonic ideas. For LAMMPING, this is their “feature film”—a record made by giving everything they have.

Doubt, the desire to change direction, and even the temptation to give up are all part of the creative process. But for LAMMPING, making music ultimately comes back to one simple principle: make it for yourself first. When musicians can become fans of their own work, any response from others becomes a bonus. With So What, What ?, they hope to leave listeners with more questions than definite answers, allowing everyone to find their own meaning in the music. Because for LAMMPING, successful music is not simply music that reaches the end, it is music that stays in your head long after the final sound disappears.

Episode 368 of The Basement aired earlier today, and we were back in Release Radar mode!
This week, I was catching up on some of the Canadian indie music released throughout September. There was a LOT to choose from, with artists exploring everything from atmospheric and layered sounds to music that seems perfectly happy ignoring traditional genre boundaries.
Basically, September had a little bit of everything, which is exactly how I like my playlists.
As always, I also made sure to shine a spotlight on some Saskatchewan artists along the way. No matter how far across the country The Basement playlist travels, there’s always room for the great music being made right here at home.
Thanks for hanging out in The Basement!

Blended in hip-hop, stoner rock and psychedelic music, @lammping established their unique sound. Not just for the Toronto-scene. But worldwide founded by Mikhail Galkin and anchored by the creative partnership between Galkin and drummer Jay Anderson, the band’s sound draws equally from heavy psych rock, hip-hop, classic songwriting, and experimental collage, creating records that feel both familiar and impossible to place within a single era or genre.

Their latest album, So What, What?, is the clearest expression of that approach. Built from fragments of memory, influence, and lived experience, the record moves seamlessly between sampled textures, personal storytelling, and adventurous songwriting. References to everything from Soviet-era recordings to golden-age hip-hop sit alongside reflections on family, parenthood, and the uncertainty of the present moment. Yet despite its wide-ranging influences, the album remains firmly rooted in songcraft rather than nostalgia. As Mikhail states: “The concept for this album is a culmination of all of the things we did as Lammping since the beginning. We had rock releases, we had sample-heavy left-field stuff, like the Bloodshot Bill album, we had hip-hop, like the collaboration with Badge Epoque Ensemble. This record is the totally of our musical vision come to life”.

Today, with the team of @wearebusybodies, we're excited to announce the new release of Lammping - 'So What, What ?' coming out November 6. Pre-order from now on via:
