Monitoring our recently established coral outplanting studies this past week!

These particular corals have had just over 3 months to get acquainted with their new environments. For bushy and branching growth forms at this stage they typically have started growing over the CoralClip device used to plant them. For the massive corals outplanted with cement they’re already blending into their environment. Given a coral outplants propensity to become inconspicuous overtime we have been using photogrammetry to monitor these plots, this way every coral can be accounted for through time and space with confidence. Swipe through to see if you can spot all the outplanted corals!

A taster of beautiful Raja Ampat

We always decide where we'll dive early in the morning when we can assess the weather, currents, and tides. We then divide our groups based on our diving levels.

In the previous video, we shared how we enjoy diving together to see the underwater beauty, coral reefs, and colorful fish.

Several locations not far from Arborek are indeed the locations of Manta Ray Cleaning Stations, and it's been almost five months (counting the high season) since we visited them.

It's not that we don't like them; in fact, we really love Manta Rays. We're involved in many projects to support the sustainability of the manta ray population in Raja Ampat (Manta Ray Survey ID, Manta Ray Female Ranger).
However, because the location is so popular, it tends to attract a large number of divers at any given hour. Imagine, every day, a maximum of 20 people (and possibly more) per hour, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. For us as tourists, that's normal, but for the manta rays, they'll be stressed, uncomfortable, and one thing's for sure, they'll slowly leave in search of a new cleaning station.
Do we want to be involved in such a situation, especially when we're enjoying the underwater world, where we should be more empathetic to nature? The answer is no.
(And in reality, many don't understand this, choosing to ignore it and continue chasing manta rays wherever they are, simply to fulfill the requirements for becoming a diver in Raja Ampat and prioritize customer satisfaction.) They might even leave a complaint (for other reasons, of course) because they didn't see these animals while diving with us.

The moment that we shared on this reels are a reminder of how beautifully the oceans's ecosystem works. That looks spontaneous to us is actually a carefully balanced rhythm of currents, plankton blooms, and feeding grounds that marine lifes has followed for generations. When mantas gather like this, they are responding to signals in the water that we cant see but they instinctively understand

We were just visitors witnessing a system that has been in motion long before we entered the ocean
Rgrds,...

Thank you @kyoumareta for cool videos..

A love letter to all my science ladies! 💌

On this year’s International Day of Women and Girls in Science I am reflecting on how grateful I am to be surrounded by such passionate, intelligent and kind #WomeninSTEM in my day to day work. I am so proud of each and every one of you and feel encouraged that youngsters these days have multitudes of inspiring role models to look up to.

Though the world feels heavy it’s more important than ever that we continue striving to place equality at the forefront of scientific advancement so together we can build a better future for all.

In my lover era for the Taylor Swift tribute show - such a fun night out in Cairns among all the eight year olds. Thanks for coming with me Bec 🥰 the show was truly impressive and the singer, Josette, had every single one of Taylor’s movements and adlibs from the Eras Tour down.

Happy 2026 to everyone!! 🎆

I am starting the year with gratitude for the support from you all last year, every comment, share, like and message from someone saying they enjoyed my videos has been super heart warming and encouraging me to continue on this SciComm journey. Also a major shoutout to everyone who has shared video content or been a victim of my underwater directing to make my outlandish ideas come to life, I appreciate you all whole heartedly!

Looking toward 2026 I hope to reach more people through #scicomm and inspire science excitement en masse. I’d love to do more collaborations so tag anyone you’d love to see me work with (scicomm creators or researchers alike) and I am always open to exploring new topics so if you have any requests don’t be afraid to comment.

If you enjoy the videos please interact with them as it helps more people see them and in turn learn about marine science (while hopefully getting excited to protect our oceans).

I’m really excited for 2026 (not sure I said that enough times… 🤭). Here we go!! 🚀👩🏼‍🔬💬

We brought a boat!

After a few flights around the country. Some excellent and some very not so excellent boats we have purchased our beautiful boat that’s going to be our home. Jacaranda is a 46ft Hellier Peterson built in Taiwan in 1983. Heavy fibreglass hull with wood interior she got so much personality.

Can’t wait to have amazing adventures and learn how to sail 🫣!

August Field Trip 1/3 in the Whitsundays!!

It’s always such an honour to be doing science with the local communities that not only depend on but of course deeply care about the ecosystems we are working to protect and strengthen!

We lucked out with the weather in the first week of August in the Whitsundays. With glassy conditions much of the time and many whale encounters on our way to site morale remained high as energy levels dwindled.

In the Whitsundays at @coralnurtureprogram @future_reefs_lab we’ve seen differences in coral outplant success across sites depending on the 🪸 coral species 🪸 so we’ve established a study to try to tease out what might be driving those differences to improve success of future outplanting efforts that may be used to speed up natural recovery at degraded sites or to build resilience to future stressors.
