Ever since I visited Columbus, Indiana last year I’ve been dreaming about it and drawing some of the major spots that I loved so much—including of course, an ice cream sundae. I finally got my first copies and opened them up, very, very nervously. I’m so happy with how they turned out! Phew.

If you’d like to find out when they’re available to order, please see the link in the bio.

Next up is getting them in the hands of design and architecture lovers of Columbus

Join us as we celebrate our two newest temporary exhibits, Excavating Truths and Hidden in Plain View, part of our 250th anniversary commemorations.

Thursday, August 27, 2026
5:30pm-7:00pm
Bartholomew County Historical Society Museum
524 3rd Street, Columbus, Indiana, 47201

| Excavating Truths |
As we celebrate and contemplate the origins of our 250-year-old nation, it makes sense to look back on the origins of our own “home” within the United States of America. Excavating Truths is about looking back on our history and noticing that different perspectives create different stories.

| Hidden in Plain View |
Black Americans have consistently lived in Bartholomew County since its founding. For over 200 years, local Black citizens have been running businesses, raising families, founding churches, and teaching our children. This history has often been overlooked. This exhibition, in collaboration with Landmark Columbus Foundation’s new Bartholomew County Black Heritage Trail, explores that history and what current residents are doing to share the stories of those who have hidden in plain view, and make them visible.

Finns know Eliel Saarinen through Helsinki’s iconic Central Railway Station, the National Museum of Finland and Hvitträsk. But who would have imagined that he would also become such a defining figure in American modern architecture?

During his visit to Columbus, Indiana, Consul General Jarmo Sareva toured four Saarinen-designed landmarks with @landmark.columbus.

The tour revealed an extraordinary father-and-son legacy, from Eliel Saarinen’s First Christian Church (1942), one of America’s first truly modern churches, to Eero Saarinen’s Irwin Union Bank (1954), Miller House (1957), and North Christian Church (1964). Together, these four buildings demonstrate the remarkable vision of two generations of Finnish architects whose influence continues to shape both Columbus and the history of modern architecture.

Foundational to why we started Merritt Chase—and to the work we continue to do in cities like Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Columbus—is a vision for a new chapter of public space and urbanism across the region.

We believe this next era can build healthier and better connected cities and advance an approach to design that is distinct to these places—rooted in local ecology, climate, culture, and history. Thank you @commonedgecollab for the opportunity to put these thoughts into the world. Links is in our bio!

You will see us talking and writing about this theme throughout the year and beyond. Follow along at the upcoming @lafoundation Future Now Summit in Detroit, the @nationalasla Conference in Los Angeles, and the @tclfdotorg Oberlander Prize Forum at Longwood Gardens.

We’ll explore what this new era for the region looks like, highlighting the many peers and partners shaping it—not only in landscape architecture and urban planning, but also in local politics, public process, philanthropy, community organizing, culture, and the arts.

A city changes when invisible stories become visible again.”
@richardmccoy reflecting on how a simple walk, open conversation, and community-led design helped transform hidden Black history into permanent public memory through the Black Heritage Trail. @urbanhikerscincy @landmark.columbus

The Republic Newspaper Office, Columbus, Indiana

The Republic building in Columbus, Indiana, is a premier example of Mid-Century Modern architecture and a testament to the city’s commitment to world-class design. Completed in 1971 for the local newspaper, The Republic, the building was designed by Myron Goldsmith of the renowned firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM). Goldsmith, a student of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, applied “Miesian” principles to create a transparent “glass box” that intentionally blurred the line between the newspaper’s internal operations and the community it served.

Physically, the building is a long, low-slung, single-story pavilion characterized by its white steel-and-aluminum frame and expansive floor-to-ceiling glass walls. The landscape, designed to echo the building’s clean lines, features rows of honeylocust and crabapple trees that provide a rhythmic, orderly backdrop without obstructing the view of the interior. This “open concept” design was intended to symbolize the transparency and accessibility essential to a free press.

While the newspaper moved to a new location in 2016, the building has found a significant second life. In 2018, Indiana University acquired the structure to house its J. Irwin Miller Architecture Program. The building’s flexible, open-plan interior remains largely intact, continuing to serve as a hub of creativity and civic pride in the heart of downtown Columbus.

It was declared a #nationalhistoriclandmark in 2012, one of seven mid-century modern masterpieces in Columbus given that prestigious designation.
