Some houses don’t need a fresh start—they need someone to listen to them.

This 1898 Victorian in Somerville had good bones and a young family who loved it — just a dated layout that no longer fit how they lived. “I like to think of a house as a silent client,” says interior designer Sarah Cole. “We always try to intuitively honor a structure and its architecture.”

Before any finish was chosen, NEDC handled the structural work behind this ~3,700-sq-ft renovation — relocating a bathroom to double the kitchen, adding a new side entrance, and moving an intricate wood archway from the entry to the living room. “We wanted to make the most difference without moving too many things,” says NEDC senior designer Drew Tessier.

Then came the design layer: a neutral palette warmed by a Morris & Co. wallpaper the homeowners loved, brown and terra-cotta tones, and a curved window-seat vestibule with Lewis & Wood wallpaper.

“It has a rhythm that reflects the family,” Cole says.
“Grounded, personal, and built to last.”

Our clients grew up in New England houses and wanted this Victorian to become a forever home without losing its identity. They weren’t looking for a new house inside an old shell. They wanted a better version of what was already there. In partnership with New England Design + Construction, who rebalanced the interior architecture, we brought the Victorian details back into focus, layering in furnishings chosen for both longevity and daily family life.
