The beautiful culmination of a year working with Stephen Haynes and with Bill Dixon’s INDEX for Large Ensemble.

I am delighted Stephen decided to fly out and join us, he brought life changing energy, music, and wisdom.
I am thrilled he brought Artur Majewski, virtuoso cornetist.

I am giddy I had a group containing heroes Evan Parker & Alexander Hawkins, super proud my Bagatelles and CWBB crews represented and in love with Alex B and Will who’ve been there since the start of this journey.

I cannot thank everyone enough and insta won’t let me paste in the tome of reflection I wrote.

Especially deep gratitude also to Taylor HB & Dave D

I had a band containing THREE Tubas and SEVEN trumpets and then Ahmed Abdullah walked in. Crazy.

Love you all madly.

Music by Zorn & Eastmond played by the most outrageous cats around.

Come hear music MOJO Magazine described as “no easy listen” and by a woman in Mexico hanging out a car window shouting “Sam Eastmond we love your crazy music”, and by my mum as “it’s like all your stuff, there’s some beautiful bits and then some other bits”

Lakeside #composersworkshopbigband
composed S@am Eastmond featuring Noel Langley

I love writing for Noel, he’s such a deeply musical, beautiful, thoughtful soul, this work from our perf at the @vortexjazzclub is the second feature I’ve written for him with the CWBB.

I find I think more melodically, in more curved arcs when I’m hearing Noel’s sound in my head. Building tension and release and corners happens differently as I imagine him skating over soundscapes. I also love writing wide open sections for him to blow on, hearing the cascades of sound that come out.

This piece came out of wanting something to bridge the gap of silence into sound after an intermission, blurring he lines of perf and preparation, thinking about Rauschenberg and cage and flocks of migratory birds and wide brush strokes.

Listen to #yazz Ahmed’s superb new EP: #forestbathing - more meditative than her previous work. It was recorded during lockdown, so it isn’t exactly new, nor a new direction, but it does inform her tribute to Miles Davis’s seminal #bitchesbrew which she infuses with new warmth and human-scale emotion.

Read more at my blog, The Department of Desire, on Substack. Details in my bio.
