Tucked behind a dune in Truro, with Edward Hopper’s former house as its only visible neighbor, this home was built for two artists who have summered on the Cape for 50 years. Fauzia Khanani of Studio Fōr kept the footprint modest so the house would blend into the landscape, then fit in everything that mattered: two painting studios, sky-high windows, and room for family to visit.

Inside, the owners skipped the clutter in favor of midcentury chairs, a mint-green suspended fireplace, and their own colorful canvases on the walls. Outside, charred cedar replaces classic Cape shingles, and a screened porch hosts dinners to birdsong. 🎨🌾

A masterclass in honoring a home’s history while making it feel entirely its own.

Designed in 1957 by Massachusetts-born architect Martin Bloom, this Swampscott residence is a standout example of New England midcentury modernism. When homeowners Dana and Joseph Arndt took ownership in 2019, much of the original architecture remained remarkably intact, from the custom built-ins and flat roof to the open floor plan and dramatic four-sided floating fireplace.

Working with interior designer Isabel Stover of Design Vision and general contractor Cain Newman of Kitchenworks, the homeowners embraced a thoughtful approach to updating the interiors. Original kitchen cabinetry and hardware were preserved, the built-in sectional was reupholstered in steel-gray fabric, and new finishes introduced fresh personality without compromising the home’s architectural integrity. Graphic wallcoverings, Japanese-inspired bathroom tile, and a live-edge dining table add distinctive touches, while expansive windows maintain a seamless connection to the surrounding landscape.

The result is a home that celebrates its modernist roots while reflecting the people who live in it today. Tap the link in bio to read the full story and explore more photos of this remarkable Swampscott home.

Moody light: same stair, different moment of the day. Daylight changes wildly throughout the course of a day and radically throughout the arc of a year. Wendell Berry wrote a lot about this idea of perceiving changes in land and nature, and I think about it often with respect to architecture, particularly with light. When you know something so closely, even the most subtle of changes become detectable.

The entry sets the tone for everything that follows, so we never let it go flat. Texture does the heavy lifting. Nothing loud, just layers that make you want to come in and stay awhile.

Which entryway is your favorite?

You know it’s been a day when you go to post a nice bar shot for Friday, and you realize it’s actually Thursday. But it feels like you’ve lived a whole week in 8 hours. So…TGIF!

Organic textures, playful shapes, and a whole lotta hardware make this tub/shower experience plenty of fun for this kiddo now (soaking-tub-turned-swimming-pool 🧜🏼‍♀️) and plenty sophisticated for as she grows 🩵🖤
