“You’re Standing Inside the Instrument: A Score for 19 Buildings” opens tonight in LISTEN HEAR Gallery at CAMi 6-10pm.
More than 20 architects, designers, and other experts in the built environment suggested their favorite buildings in Indianapolis that we then paired with Indianapolis-based artists. The artists then played some aspect or aspects of the buildings as sort of instruments to create a part of a combined soundscape or a sort of song.

All 19 audio pieces will rotate at different times, creating a soundscape that varies throughout the run of the show. The audio pieces are all paired with static videos of the exteriors of the buildings by Jim Walker.

Artists:
Oreo Jones @oreojones (Walker Theatre)
Rob Funkhouser @funkoftherob (City Market)

Around lunchtime on New Year’s Eve, our team at MTCHBX officially merged with BAR Communications. After several years of working alongside Brad Rateike and the BAR team as strategic partners, it was clear that our vision was aligned in the ways we aim to serve clients well, recruit and develop great talent, and truly value relationships.

It also comes at a meaningful time for me personally. Entering year nine in business feels a little surreal. In 2016, I bet on myself and started a communications business. I didn’t have a perfected five-year plan, but after an incredible experience working for U.S. Senator Dan Coats (where I held nearly every job in his office) I knew I wanted to be around people, solve problems, and be “in the arena” (as Teddy Roosevelt would put it).

It turns out Brad Rateike is wired the same way.

We both also grew up in Johnson County and got our starts working for great Americans in government — Brad for then-Gov. Mitch Daniels, and me for Senator Coats. We both spent time in D.C., and we both left government to start businesses (Brad did it twice).

We took different routes in our professional growth, but learned the same lesson: when you’re trying to do hard things and solve real problems, you want people you trust (personally and professionally) with you in the trenches. Brad calls them “foxhole people,” and he would know, because he is one. That’s why I’m grateful for Brad — and for the team we’re building at BAR.

So I’m excited, and genuinely grateful, to start my ninth year in business with a new title: partner and principal at BAR Communications.

I’m proud of the work that brought us here, and I’m fired up for what comes next.

An incredible evening at Plantasia featuring the incomparable Suzanne Ciani, who I got to meet and speak with after her performance (on the 9th anniversary of Don Buchla’s passing; he invented the synthesizer she plays that bears his name). She was delightful.

Also enjoyed sets by @windyandcarlofficial @k__lc and @cassie__vines
