The making of “Horses can be cowgirls too” 🐴⭐️🤠

I’ve made a few quilts before but this one involved a few new techniques for me. I made it for joy and because I wanted to exhibit it, and against AI because I made the entire thing with my hands and a sewing machine and scissors. The entire thing is made with items from my stash, including the pillowcase base, and the avocado-pit dyed fabric from my second year of uni. The metallic pink were formerly pj shorts that are probably 15 years old (peep them in the last slide), and everything else was either bought from the op shop or given to me over the years.

As soon as I saw the exhibition theme of Big Horse Energy, I knew I wanted a silly horse with cowgirl boots on!! And I am so happy with how she turned out. It’s not perfect but someone bought her (thank you Nour!! 💕) and now she gets to live in her forever home, hopefully reminding those who see her that handmade art is the best, art is political, and that you can be whatever want (including a cowgirl!!)

Ps also a huge thank you to Claudia at @schoolhouse_studios who curated this exhibition and made this all possible ✨✨

ID: 1. A photo of the quilt on the washing line. It’s a brown horse (made from avocado-pit dyed fabric, with pink metallic cowgirl boots on. She’s surrounded by stars in pink, blue and silver, of different sizes and some of them are three stars in one. Her boots have silver stars on them. There is green velvet grass and she is wearing a light pink hat with silver and metallic pink. The tail is 3D: plaited with a pink bow on it. The border is an orangey-red. 2. Video of the horse quilt flapping in the breeze 3. Sewing the bias binding (red) to other bias binding (pink), so that covered the back. 4. Quilting in progress! 5. Horse, pre-quilting. 6. Video of the horse with stars, pre-quilting. 7. The stars in a stack. 8. The horse on the background (a pillow case), pre-stars and pre-quilt. 9. Horse template out of paper. 10. Drew the horse onto some paper stuck together. 11. The fabrics I started with. End description.

Frocktails 2026 🐜🎂🍰🕷️🧺

Outfit reveal!!! I had a very lovely time at Frocktails this year (in past years, I have been a bit…socially stressed, but this year I really made an effort to talk to lots of people, and sewing people are so nice!)

The ✨details✨

The fabric was designed by me (using a mixture of hand drawing / painting, Photoshop and Illustrator) and printed by the legends at @nextstateprint. I got 4m of Oxford Cotton and the smallest amount of georgette I could buy (1m).

I had plans to make a different pattern, but in the end I knew I wouldn’t have enough time to get it done (bad timing on my part), so I went with a tried and true pattern: The Nerida Hansen Smock Dress (my first ever sewing pattern). It came together relatively easily and I do love the fit and shape!

I made everything but the sleeves out of the cotton; I wanted something a little bit different and used the georgette. I laboured over the sleeves for ages because I wasn’t sure how to get the volume I wanted, but I somewhat got there in the end. Georgette is not the most forgiving so I had to just move on at a certain point!

I also made my bag which I got a lot of compliments on during the night, and it’s so silly and I kinda love having a cake bag 🍰. I made my bow (using leftover fabric and a clip bought (last-minute) from the $2 shop, sewn in to attach to my hair) and my earrings (using stash findings and shrink plastic for the bugs). Loafers are old (and secondhand, from Savers), and socks were a KK present a couple of years ago.

I took almost zero photos on the night (except for my bathroom selfie??) so will be looking forward to the professional pics!

🐴🐎⚠️ Horse girls unite 🐴🐎⚠️!!!

I have a piece in this exhibition, running next weekend at @schoolhouse_studios, 17 – 20th September (Thursday to Sunday) in Coburg!

Can’t wait to see all the horsies that people have chosen to represent! Swipe for a sneak peek of my quilted cow girl 💕🤠.

My piece is called “Horses can be cow girls too” and I am very happy with how it turned out! I’ve made various quilts before but nothing like this. I bought nothing new for it; everything is from the stash! I hope this is the beginning of many more quilts 🪡

ID: 1. Poster for the event (by @rubysyme_design). It has a diva blue horse, wearing red boots with a blue body and blue stars. It’s got an aqua mane. The poster background is pink and the exhibition name is: Horse girl energy, which is written in red with a bright green outline. It says: A schoolhouse studios exhibition 17 – September 28 Victoria St, Coburg. Pic 2 is my quilted horse. It’s a brow horse with pink boots, a pink cowgirl hat with a star on it. There are stars in various shades of pink, silver and blue and the horse is standing on velvet green grass. The base is white. The pink boots have silver stars on them. End description.

Happy new year!!! It’s Rosh Hashana (Jewish new year) tonight and I hope your years are sweet!!!🍎🍏🐝🍯 These are a selection of cards I made 🐟

ID: Three Rosh Hashana cards. The first is three herrings that are saying: we’ve been herring something about a new year. The second says: I hope this is your best year sho-far with a shofar underneath and the third is two apples holding hands (red apple and green apple), and they’re saying: Hope your year is apple-solutely wonderful. All three cards say שנה טובה (happy new year) in Hebrew letters at the top. End description.

As I begin to think about my 2026 @melbournefrocktails plans, I have also been keeping in mind my designs from last year! Everything was hand drawn and then scanned, image traced, edited, digitally coloured and put into repeat, to finally be printed at @nextstateprint in cotton twill.

I went through so many iterations of this design — specifically the base, but as you can see in picture 2, I also went back and added in tomatoes and olives (originally it was just going to be a plain pasta print). I even mocked some dresses up because I didn’t know what pattern I wanted to use at this stage.

I was really happy with the outcome of the print and the fabric and although I’ve so far been very indecisive about what I want to do this year, I’m slowly getting some ideas!

Ps I realised I say Peachtober in the video — clearly I was knee-deep in both creative challenges — but I meant Frocktails! Both roll off the tongue nicely

ID: 1. Video of me revealing my fabric from State. Its blue with a pasta, olive and tomato repeat. 2. The pasta shapes, coloured in. 3. Tomatoes and olives, all hand drawn. The top five tomatoes and top three olives are coloured in and there are maybe 40 pen drawn ones underneath (the rejected pile). 4&5. Repeats with different coloured bases: pink, dusty blue, white, brown, yellow, light blue. 6. Four dressed mocked up with the different coloured bases.

I started this heart shaped trinket dish in June last year…anyway happy to say it’s finally finished and I think it’s quite cute ❤️🍦🍥💗

VD: A vídeo showing the making of this dish. I made the ice creams / hearts / swirls on the top of the dish using a mould. I explain that I dried the top and bottom together (silly) so the got stuck, but the I managed to unstick it (finally). The glaze is pink, and the inside of the lid has crawled !!! but the bits and pieces and in shades of reds, pinks and purples. There are videos of me glazing the top pink and of painting the little top pieces. I zoom in on the unglazed (but unfired) piece to reveal the fired and glazed piece in all its glory. End description.

Did a phulkari workshop through @lanewaylearning via @kingstonartsau 🧵🪡📍

This Punjabi embroidery style was new to me, and I enjoyed learning about the techniques used and then trying them myself. I found it quite challenging to have a clean back but it was good fun trying to count the tiny holes in the fabric to (try and) keep it even.

VD: The process of Phulkari. It starts with my supplies: hoop, pencil, paper, carbon paper, fabric, thread, needle. I used the carbon paper to transfer the design onto the fabric and then did my best to only hav a tiny piece of thread at the back of the fabric. The end result is more is a sampler of red and orange thread than a finished piece. End description.

When I did my exchange in Manchester, I was lucky enough to have access to a riso printer!

I had done riso printing once or twice before but was stoked to be able to spend more time with it; it still confuses me to no end (as far as I understand, it’s kiiiiind of like a photocopier in a way??) and I would love to get more into it here.

Our assignment was about making a shoe. I went with a sensory route (my shoe changed colour when wet) — and I used the delightful colours of a riso printer to advertise all the bells and whistles of my shoe 👞 👡🥿🩴👠

I’ve been thinking a bit about my Manchester work, so keep your eyes peeled for some of my work from then!

VD: A riso printer in action, printing the orange shapes of my posters which already has blue and pink on it. End description.

On the weekend I went with my friend to a workshop run by @danmchugh_art at @26_advantage 🖼️

We learnt how to make paper (swipe to the end to see a video of my finished paper!!!) and also how to create paper stencils and print with them. I printed an onion and a tomato 🍅.

Paper making is kind of a delight and I was quite happy with the two prints I made. I usually take forever to ideate and plan and execute but I really tried my best to keep it simple and I’m happy with my two veggie prints 🧅.

ID: 1. Paper onion stencil 2. Paper in the deckle, as the water drips out. 3. My tomato print. We printed on handmade paper that Dan had pre-prepared for us 4. Dan demonstrating how to make paper 5. A video of paper. It’s mostly white with flecks of other colours. It’s textured on one side and smooth on the other. End descriptions.

I’ve not been great at making time to make or post any crafting I’ve been doing (admittedly not a lot).

However my friend’s 30th was an excellent excuse (and deadline) to make this Kuzco costume!!! Dress is an old Buon dress, gold fabric I bought from @spotlightstores, boots and socks are my own, and the glass vials are from the $2 shop.

Reference photos courtesy of the internet, ankle tassels, belt, and breastplate made with my sewing machine, earrings with foam board and paper (and my Cricut to cut them out), hat was papier mache, foam board, fabric and patience.

Kuzco’s Poison (poison for Kuzco) was made with tiny glass vials, food dye, glue, and my @cricut_anz for the teeny llama shape.

I won best dressed and the trophy is proudly sitting on my trinket shelf. Thank you Ana for such a fun theme and night!

ID: 1. Me as Kuzco holding the aforementioned trophy and some poison. 2. The hat, as papier mâché, on a blue balloon. 3. Work in progress…figuring out how to cut the fos board to fit on the top of the hat. 4. Success! A photo of me wearing the uncovered hat. I am wearing glasses, my dressing gown and holding up a peace sign. 5. A mirror selfie of the outfit, sans hat and belt). This was night one, where I wanted to check it would all look okay in the end! 6. An #ootd video, explaining my outfit. End description.

#memademay day 18

Not have a great time with the photos / videos but done is better than perfect!!! This is a Wrap Top by @peppermintmagazine and it was my very first sewing project and then I got stuck on step two because I didn’t know what a dart was xx (how far we’ve come!!)

It’s not the most well constructed garment but it’s definitely wearable and it’s also nostalgic!!

Wearing it with my new @dejourjeansofficial, and a second hand knitted vest my sister found at the op shop. Earrings are old Diva, and I’m wearing my Rollies and a pair of frilly white socks.

VD: A video of me showing the various parts of my yellow wrap top. I’m wearing it underneath an ombré blue knitted vest, and I show the plain yellow sleeves, with the floral bodice and the tie wrap. End description.
