SALTWATER

Saltwater was an evening I made for some of my closest friends. It began, in part, with a gift: my friends bought me a 125-gallon aquarium, and eventually that gift grew into an entire world.

I asked everyone to dress as though they were attending an ocean-inspired Met Gala. We spent the evening exploring my three home aquariums, learning about the animals inside them, eating a 15-course omakase, and eventually meeting THE CREATURE.

THE CREATURE is plucked from the sea floor and brought somewhere new. Attached to it are starfish, coral, barnacles - incredibly visible.

But something less visible is attached too: saltwater.

Everything attached, even what you cannot see, are memories and lessons from a life still held somewhere within this one.

And somewhere in building all of this, I kept coming back to the same question:

What stays with you when all else goes?

Even things that transform still carry traces of what they once were. A person leaves. A place becomes somewhere you used to live. A chapter ends.

And still, something stays attached.

A dreadful lesson. A happy memory.

Even transformation carries something forward - pieces of who you were, gathered into who you’re becoming. Maybe every place you’ve loved, every moment that shaped you, every goodbye, every step forward still lives in one continuous you.

Eventually, the version of you reading my words right now becomes history all the same.

TALES OF SAN FRANCISCO, the inaugural art exhibition at The Moscone Center, highlights the partnership between this iconic event venue and long-serving local artistic epicenter 111 Minna Gallery. The exhibition features the work of three local painters – Alec Huxley, Daniel Chen, and Ursula X. Young – who celebrate the multifarious perceptions of the City by the Bay. The storied home of the Ohlone, the Barbary Coast, the Gold Rush, the Beat Generation, the Summer of Love, the LGBTQA+ Rights Movement, the tech/biotech revolution, and more, San Francisco has attracted dreamers of all kinds, who in turn become immersed in and contribute to its creative culture.

Daniel Chen explores the way technology has affected our visual language and how it shapes the way we think and remember the past. Much like memories themselves, Chen’s oil paintings at first appear to be blurry, abstract colors and shapes. On closer inspection – and particularly through a phone or camera lens – they reveal specific moments in San Francisco: Giants Ballpark, the Tenderloin, and Market Street.

Ursula Xanthe Young’s urban fairy-tale imagery has become a hallmark of street culture in San Francisco and beyond. A painter, illustrator, designer, and muralist, Young creates fine-lined illustrations and colorful modern paintings that exude the whimsical, soulful, and free spirit of the city. Her rendering of skin tone blends Impressionism with pixelation, resulting in portraits of universal feminine beauty.

Alec Huxley’s cinematic scenes serve as imperfect records of place, time, and architecture. His work is simultaneously stark and colorful, depicting space travelers moving through San Francisco neighborhoods. His process combines photography, digital composition, and acrylic painting.

Every Monday doesn’t have to look the same. It just has to be productive.

This week I was up until 2AM Sunday night deep in a creative project for @boot2turf . So I didn’t force a 5AM workout. I made the routine work for me instead.

My workout looked like a walk and much needed catch up with @laurenrascoe

My coffee shop was my go to fav @sweetbarbakery their iced carmel latte made by the dad is literal dream.

Win the Week was never about perfection. It’s about showing up for yourself in whatever way that actually looks like that day.

It’s not how you start, but how you finish!

So the real question is…will you win next week with me?
