🐈‍⬛Brooklyn energy meets Art Nouveau ornament. Meet @lavender_hag Rachel Genito, the newest illustrator on my CAT Agency team! ✨

Rachel draws inspiration from personal stories, the culture around her, and the rhythms of New York City. Her love of intricate detail and ornamentation runs throughout her work—and I’m excited to see where she takes it next.

The recipient of the 2025 Society of Illustrators Zankel Scholarship, Rachel is especially interested in illustrating for young adult readers and creating graphic novels.

Away from her drawing table, you might find her sketching Brooklyn’s architecture from the sidewalk, baking, or wandering through Green-Wood Cemetery.

Take a look through her work and help me welcome Rachel! What story—or book cover—would you love to see her illustrate?

Editors and art directors: reach out if you have a project in mind. I’d love to connect you. @chadwbecks @the_cat_agency

Thesis Show!! 🐦‍⬛🔩☂️🍎📚🍃

Last May, I had my thesis displayed at the Pratt Shows! My thesis project was about taking a few well-known young adult books and redesigning their covers. Being a designer and illustrator in the publishing industry is a dream for me. This project became a way for me to conjure that dream into an actual project. It gave me a chance to use my design skills in doing what I love the most as a creative; visual storytelling!(in the form of book covers lol)

I worked on the illustrations, the typography, front and back cover layouts, the spine, the end papers and other visual aspects that go into a physical book.

I’ll start posting the artwork and design stuff I did for this project individually soon👀

This project is so dear to my heart. I grew up surrounded by books. My dad (next to my project with my mom on the 6th picture) being a huge reader and an author himself, collecting books became a huge source of comfort and passion for me since I was very young. I was able to go back into some of my favorite books from when I was younger and redesign them, just like how I reimagined them when I was 12.

It was a pleasure to be a Pratt student. The people I met, the classes I took and the inspiring designers I befriended will always be dear to me. I especially want to thank my close friends who went through the experience of “preparing for thesis” together with me and all my professors that helped us with their guidance, patience and mentorship. You guys made it all worth it.

Here’s to what comes next! There is already some exciting things happening but I’m excited to see what post-thesis life has to offer🥳🥳

With love and appreciation for all of you reading this,

Today I had the privilege of attending Commencement at Pratt Institute @prattinstitute and graduating my first generation of students, the Class of 2026. It was an incredible honor to share this moment with such thoughtful, generous, and talented students.

Watching them reach this milestone, I also found myself reflecting on my own journey, as I completed my first year teaching at the institution. I leave this year with nothing but gratitude, in what has been, without a doubt, one of the most professionally rewarding years of my life in education.

Thank you to all of my students, who have shaped and challenged me in ways I could not have imagined, and to my colleagues in the @prattbfacomd Communication Design Illustration department for your generosity, wisdom, and friendship. I truly could not have asked for a better first year as a tenure-track professor.

Here’s to many more years of learning, teaching, making, and growing together.

“MAHA departs from leftist thought by drawing criticism away from the institutionalized, inherently broken system of healthcare, and directs it towards the day-to-day choices of everyday Americans, such as diet, sun exposure, and proximity to raw milk. They claim that your health is your problem, and just because the health industry is corrupt doesn’t mean you have an excuse to be sick, unhealthy, or dead.”

In this piece, Ella breaks down the key figures, terms and moments that have punctuated RFK Jr.’s reign as Secretary of Health, through which she explores various diet influencers and fads that spread harmful misinformation about health. Ella demonstrates how “wellness culture” is ultimately an instrument for the government to keep its subjects weak, weary, and only superficially “healthy”.
