"Multigenerational Housing"

Students: Gabriel Hambrick @gabrielhambrick_art, Mikah Liu @mikahliu_arch

Pratt School of Architecture @prattsoa
Prof. Lawrence Blough @lawrenceblough

Final model
Scale 1:8
Materials: Basswood, acrylic, bristol, PLA

The project begins at the individual housing unit, where hinges create shared spaces that expand into larger "eddies", cloister like areas that connect personal living with communal environments.

A core idea is "pushing and pulling away." Parts of the building push outward to engage the community, while others pull back to form entrances and shared spaces like a market and public daycare. Cuts in the facade mark these moments, and a vertical social network guides movement through the building, bringing the neighborhood in while maintaining a clear range from public to private.

Two typologies define the project: a tower and a slab. In the tower, sharing happens at the unit level, workspaces push toward the neighborhood while social spaces move vertically inside. The slab, closer to the street, is more private, with shared outdoor balconies and a rooftop garden connecting residents to the wider Red Hook community. At ground level, a market and daycare pull back from the street to welcome people in, with overlapping circulation systems that balance separation and interaction.

Case Studies in Design is a collective writing project led by PennPraxis aimed at stimulating culture-shifting dialogue between public agencies, funders, community leaders, schools, and the architecture, landscape, planning, heritage and art fields through a public library of 15 case studies and a summit meeting in January 2027.

Deborah Gans and Lawrence Blough are professors at Pratt Institute and co-directors of the Housing Futures Lab. Together they studied the Church Grove collaboratively-built housing project designed by Architype and Shepheard Epstein Hunter for the Rural Urban Synthesis Society (RUSS) Community Land Trust, inspired by architect Walter Segal’s earlier self-built community in London, Walter’s Way.

Visit the link in our bio to read this and other recently published case studies from our first cohort of authors.

Delighted to have our project, Sogovia’s Loop a possible future renewable energy masterplan for Yellowstone National Park, on display in the exhibition Making Energy Visible, curated by Tulay Atak with design by @cloudsao at AIANY Center for Architecture @centerforarch. The exhibition gathers interpretations, representations, and visualizations of energy in architecture. The exhibition unfolds in six parts—Bodies at Work, Sources of Energy, Conserving Energy, Systems of Conversion, Distribution of Power, and Consumption to Expenditure—each presented through a timeline of architectural, infrastructural, and environmental projects. Alongside these timelines, invited artists and practitioners explore how architecture today can make energy perceptible, debatable, and public.

Over the next weeks, we will release more information around this speculative energy masterplan for #yellowstonenationalpark. In the meantime we are simply thrilled to be exhibiting alongside our esteemed colleagues and friends: Karen Bausman, Lawrence Blough @lawrenceblough and Simone Giostra, Exikon (Bernhard Sommer and Malgorzata Nawara Sommer), Judith Fegerl @judithfegerl, Matthias Kessler, CASE @case_rpi, (Fengqi Li, Alexandros Tsamis, Kristen R. Schell), Mosbach Paysagistes @mosbachen, jose sanchez @jomasan, Emmet Sutton @work.in_process, and Michael Wang @mbwang

.
Edited by Tülay Atak; Luis Callejas; Jonathan A. Scelsa; Jørgen Johan Tandberg.
.
Routledge, 2024
.
“This book presents a series of pedagogical experiments translating climate science research into the architectural curriculum. Attempting to reach balance between science and speculation, it provides practical , demonstrated experiments while also interrogating a designer’s agency in the face of climate uncertainty.”

Was an honor and privilege to have the book launch of Pedagogical Experiments for Architecture in a Changing Climate this past Monday at the Center For Architecture AIA NY @centerforarch . Thankful for our exhilarating roundtable of contributors and editors focusing on the questions, “What are the impediments that architectural education faces for addressing the changing climate and what must change in our curricula in order to develop an experimental environment of climatism?” With compelling provocations provided by @lawrenceblough, @holesofmatter @it_urbe , @naturalmaterialslab , @petrszko, @asensiomah , @lcla_office, #tülayatak and thank you to @quilianriano and @prattsoa for sponsoring this event. Special thanks to Julian Barroso and @dzoric for the photography. Next stop @aho_architecture_design next Wednesday!
