Some behind the scenes shots of our latest exhibition in collaboration with @culturesof_

Beyond the Frame: Printmaking in Dialogue with Film, will be opening this Friday 9th October at the Bath House Gallery, Sovereign Design House

We are delighted to be collaborating with @culturesof_ Film and artists Rozi Fuller, Layla Jabbari and Emma Jackson.

The exhibition explores what happens when printmaking meets film, photography and the moving image.

This is a great opportunity to see a selection of work by three artists who are rethinking what printmaking can do.

Blending risograph, Tetrapak and monoprinting with film, animation and Augmented Reality, these artists move fluidly between processes and media to explore new ways of making and presenting printed and moving images.

This exhibition has been produced by West Yorkshire Print Workshop ( @wypw )as part of the University of Huddersfield’s Cultures of Film programme.

Friday 9 October - Saturday 14 November
Monday - Thursday & Saturdays, 10am - 3pm, Fridays,

SCENE BUT NOT HEARD celebrates drag and gay performance in Hu3/Hull in the 1970s, 80s and 90’s. The project is one part of long-term work in the area led by us @eofushu3 and follows our mission to make visible and keep safe important HU3 stories.
It all began with us coming across photos of The Broadway Belles in a Hessle Road studio. From that we’ve hunted and followed our nose to amass many hundred of images and lots of oral history recordings of performers, photographers and audiences.
These are on our bespoke SBNH website (see bio). Eventually they will also become archives @hullhistorycentre and @bishopsgateinstitute in London. Thus creating a legacy that generations will be able to freely access.
Yes it’s important, yes it’s powerful viewing, yes it’s moving, yes it’s ongoing and yes we are going to be doing lots to share what we are finding. Check out @scene.bnh for updates.

Importantly SBNH is collaborating with individuals and groups from Hull’s LGBTQIA+ community inviting them to respond to the archive. Their work will be shared across the city well into 2027.

Scene But Not Heard is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, we have been able to discover and showcase this important archive. @heritagefunduk #NationalLottery #HeritageFund

Scene But not Heard is funded by Historic England as part of Historic England’s Everyday Heritage grant programme. The programme celebrates working class histories and seeks to explore untold stories and celebrate the people and places at the heart of our history. This funding has supported over 100 projects across England, which seek to tell the stories of our nation’s working-class heritage projects are all community-led and people-focused and aim to further the nation’s collective understanding of the past; the grant programme was launched in 2022. @HistoricEngland EverydayHeritage

Investment from the Humber Museums Partnership helped kickstart this project. The ongoing support of Three Ways East and the Brignall Family Trust, underpins it all.

A History of Printmaking continues this Friday and Saturday at Eastgate Studio Gallery, 11am to 4pm.

We are grateful to Layla Jabbari for her contribution to the exhibition with “A Stitch in Time” lithograph and “Scene But Not Heard” intaglio and solarplate etching. Layla has also loaned the plates for display.

In the 1970s, 80s and 90s a vibrant drag scene thrived in the HU3/Docklands area of Hull. Performers, musicians, pub and club owners created unforgettable nights. Behind the scenes, photographers and audiences quietly captured it all.

Photographs along with oral histories have been gathered and recorded to form an archive of the local drag and LGBTQIA+ heritage of the area. The project Scene But Not Heard is a work in progress as stories continue to be collected and shared.

As part of the project local artists have been given the opportunity to create a response to the archive.

Layla’s print was made using a photograph by Alex Simpson and it is of the Dreamgirls, an act in the 1980s that continued to perform up until 2025.

The process uses photopolymer plates. A metal plate coated with a light sensitive film which is exposed to light through a negative image and an aquatint film. This is a form of intaglio printmaking.

The original photograph is a beautiful image. Layla hoped to add colour and depth to the image through this process and the use of highly pigmented inks to add a richness to the final print.

The work is made possible through funding from The National Heritage Lottery, Humber Museums Partnership and Historic Museums England and is done in conjunction with Three Ways East.

You can find out more about the archive and listen to an interview with the Dreamgirls at https://sceneheard.co.uk/

The SCENE BUT NOT HEARD archive @scene.bnh is full of amazing photos of folks in and around HU3. Folks getting ready, enjoying themselves, drag acts performing and the LGBTQIA+ scene in general. How great does everyone look?
None of this would be possible without the photographers. Be they students, commercial, professional…. All who took amazing shots when it wasn’t common to carry a camera out.
What they focused on is now coming to light and what they captured in the 1970, 80s and 90s shows how vibrant, powerful and accommodating HU3 was.
This post recognises some of them and their efforts : (credit in image order) Paul Benstead, Paul Weymes, Tony Ward, Marcus Pennington, George Norris, Mindy Meleyal, Dave Whatt, Brett Hambling, Ross Williams, LINDEN, Russell Boyce, unknown and Murray Clarke.

We’d also like to know if you feature in these images so we can hear about those times from your side of the lens.
