— Stephanie, an artist from Australia, has completed her one-month residency at ShinAiKan. To close her stay, we held a one-day exhibition, “Liminal Zones.” She spent the month walking around Teshima, collecting rubbish from the beaches and drawing the landscape, looking for places where nature and human life meet. The paintings, drawings, monoprints and art books that emerged from this time were shown in the gallery. We were also happy to welcome some new faces alongside those who regularly join our events. And once again, “Oda VS.” Oda, a teacher for 21 years, proudly says, “I don’t understand art at all!” Recently, however, he has started saying, “Art is becoming interesting to me.” Someone who openly says he doesn’t understand art facilitates conversations between the artist and people from the island. We can ask what we don’t understand and talk about what we see in our own words. No specialist knowledge is needed for a conversation to begin. We see how this space develops over time as part of usaginingen’s art practice. Most of all, we were happy that Stephanie enjoyed everyday life on Teshima. We don’t want a residency to simply end when the stay is over. We hope the relationships formed here continue beyond it. Thank you for the month, Stephanie. Next time, come back anytime as a friend.

An incredible two days were had last week with Chris Ingham in his new 'Multi Plate Soft Ground Etching on Copper' Workshop! Over two days we took a deep dive into soft ground plate preparation, application, the details of the delicate acid bath and then we spent a *wild* day pulling out every tube of colour on hand to print the most exciting and outrageous colour combinations we could find. We will be running this workshop again next year — dates to be confirmed — but if you are interested, let us know and we will be in touch! #softground #etching #printmaking

Today I had the absolutely pleasure of visiting @baldessinstudio. It’s the second time I’ve been there and it’s like stepping into the most beautiful world full of creativity, beauty, nature and inspiration. All of the Artist I met today were just so wonderful and kind and I left there feeling much richer with joy than when I had arrived. One of the Artists shared the story of this beautiful darling place with me and it’s so incredibly touching. One of love, of shared creativity, of grief and of growth. Painful and beautiful. If you have the chance to visit here, you simply must take it. The wonder created by @leaflovinart and @nicole_bowller is just absolute magic!!! Thank you for sharing with us all xo
