POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Two years ago I had a dream where I saw a beautiful structure with images of leaves and flowers that created beautiful shadows on the ceiling, walls, and floor. The structure was so cool in my mind that I had to draw it. Today I flipped through Instagram and saw @leahsobsey had created this incredible piece. The images looked remarkably similar to me! Maybe @leahsobsey and I ran into one another in dream world ❤️💜❤️

Many thanks to @carrieroy and @lydiarosenberg__ at the #huntinstituteforbotanicaldocumentation for all your help and support!!

Leah and I had a thrilling week in Pittsburg. Here are a few photos of the illustrations of #mariasibyllamerian - if you don’t already know of her genius. We were able to see her many works translated across different books and media, along with the works of other early female botanical illustrators.

Thanks also to the #huntinstitute and #posnerfoundation for this amazing fellowship opportunity. 🌟🌟🌟

If you weren’t able to come to our New York opening on Thursday, our show is up at #rickwesterfineart through the new year. Here are some snaps for those who live farther afield. ✨✨✨

The work includes pieces from our series on Emily Dickinson; a collaboration with the Brandywine Museum on the ecology of that region; as well as new ongoing work from our collaboration with the New York Botanical Garden - their old growth forest and photo archive.

All works are archival photographic prints and are made originally with the pigments of plants, leaves, stems, bark, flowers, lichen, ferns, fruits etc. And exposed outside in the sun. #anthotypes

We made a thing with @leahsobsey 💙 back in 2019 Leah had the idea to create a replica of Thoreau’s cabin, to scale, but cover it in cyanotypes of his plant specimens in homage to Anna Atkins….and we are proud to say..here it is!!..just off Franklin Steet in Chapel Hill 💙 Please join us for the opening this Saturday! from 5-7 at The Horace Williams House, 610 East Rosemary Street. Leah also has some gorgeous pieces on display inside the house. Hope to see you there! Exhibition runs through December 31 💙

Amanda Marchand for Magenta again. Since “Flash Forward,” my work has evolved in many ways. I don’t use a camera anymore – that’s the biggest change since I started out.

🌷A professional high has been a 6-year collaboration with artist @leahsobsey. We started working at the start of the pandemic to reimagine poet Emily Dickinson’s relationship to gardening and nature through her herbarium, a project called “This Earthen Door.” These images are of our book published with Datz Press in 2025. Datz will be at the #newyorkartbookfair this weekend if you are in the hood. ✨✨✨

Also - Check out @centerphotographicart and their current 8x10 print auction. We have an image from “This Earthen Door” you can bid on through Oct 8! All images in the auction start at only $80, so lots of affordable photography.

One thing that has saved me along the way, was - art residencies. 💖 I waited 10 years to do the first one again after having children… I have now participated in over a dozen, and I don’t think I would be an artist without that support. At a time when I was wondering if I could continue with art, straddling too many responsibilities, residencies afforded me the time and space to go deep and connect, to follow a difficult thread, and they also provided a network, friendship, inspiration, and mentoring in some cases. They have been so important to my career – I wish them for everyone.

If you aren’t able to secure an existing residency, you can self-create one with a peer, or alone in a beach shack, or on a train across the country. The important thing is to set aside the time and space and to get away from the regular demands of life. It’s amazing what you can do with just 2 weeks. @datzpress @datzmuseumofart @magentafoundation

Tomorrow, September 19, Point Reyes National Seashore Association (PRNSA) hosts Party on the Pacific Plate, its annual fundraiser supporting its important work in conservation and community throughout the park.

Can’t make the party? Amanda Marchand and Leah Sobsey’s Point Reyes: Northern Curly-Leaved Monardella & Ice Plant was commissioned to benefit PRNSA’s seashore plant restoration efforts. A few editions are still available, with a portion of each purchase going directly to PRNSA.
