How do we power the AI boom without blowing past climate goals and breaking the grid? Which approach is the market rewarding? Such questions were central to the 2026 Climate Business & Investment Conference: Energy Tech, a joint effort by Columbia Climate School and Columbia Business School's Tamer Institute for Social Enterprise and Climate Change.

Climate and business are no longer siloed topics, and the stakes feel especially high when AI is driving a dramatic surge in power demand, said Bruce Usher, co-director of the Tamer Institute and professor at Columbia Business School and Columbia Climate School. “The challenge [of meeting demand] is not only an environmental one, but also an economic one and strategic one. The race to power the next generation of growth will help shape industries, capital flows, competitiveness, and long-term resilience across the global economy,” said Usher.

Every day seems to bring a new headline about advances in AI. But when it comes to climate change, AI is a two-sided coin, with tremendous potential to benefit the environment, even as the data centers powering it consume vast amounts of water and energy. How will these two opposing dynamics balance out—or can they?

Columbia Climate School Dean and sustainable energy technology expert Alexis Abramson, Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment and MS in Climate Finance director Lisa Sachs, and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory climate scientist Marco Tedesco weigh in via State of the Planet (🔗 in bio).

LEAP is a Columbia-affiliated NSF Science and Technology Center dedicated to improving near-term #climate modeling by combining #climatescience, physics, data science, and machine learning.

As part of their Three Cairns Fellowship with @leap_stc, Kathy Chen ’26, Jules Frost ’26, Yi Ju ’25, and David Urbont ’26 conducted strategic research to assess LEAP’s role in the changing climate data landscape and identified opportunities for broader impact across the ecosystem. The team mapped key climate intelligence players by timescale and use case, outlined potential customer segments, and proposed strategic pathways to expand LEAP’s role as an open-access, mission-driven leader in climate science beyond its current NSF funding cycle.

The Three Cairns Fellowship is part of our Business and Climate Change Initiative at @columbia_biz. It provides support to MBA and EMBA students who complete semester- or year-long projects at the intersection of #climatechange and business.

What are geoengineering and cloud seeding, and what are their implications for future climate mitigation strategies?

Kara Lamb—research scientist at Columbia University studying aerosols, cloud physics, and machine learning—explains via State of the Planet (🔗 in bio).

"These areas definitely warrant further research, but we are not yet at the stage where we should consider employing geoengineering at scale, and it shouldn’t become a distraction from the need to reduce greenhouse gases," says Lamb.
