In my Journey Through Narnia class (@learnwithjillian ), we just finished reading The Voyage of the ‘Dawn Treader’! I want to take a moment to pause and appreciate the ending to this book because I absolutely love it (spoilers ahead!). Aslan informs Lucy and Edmund that they are not going to come back to Narnia. Lucy is crushed at the thought of not meeting Aslan in their own world. “…how can we live, never meeting you?” Lucy asks. “But you shall meet me, dear one,” Aslan says, “But there I have another name. You must learn to know me by that name. This was the very reason why you were brought to Narnia, that by knowing me here for a little, you may know me better there.” I love this aspect of the ending so much.
What is Aslan’s other name? A little girl named Hila asked this question of C.S. Lewis by letter. Lewis’ response is fantastic, and I love how he wrote back to help the reader figure out the answer herself by critical thinking:
“As to Aslan’s other name, well I want you to guess. Has there never been anyone in this world who (1.) Arrived at the same time as Father Christmas. (2.) Said he was the son of the great Emperor. (3.) gave himself up for someone else’s fault to be jeered at and killed by wicked people. (4.) Came to life again. (5.) Is sometimes spoken of as a Lamb…. Don’t you really know His name in this world. Think it over and let me know your answer!”

I had the opportunity to ask my students the question… “what do you think Aslan’s other name is?” I do not know if my students from this class are all Christian or not, but they are aware that C.S. Lewis was, and of the general symbology of the book. Their answers included Jesus, God, I AM, the Lord.

Onward to The Silver Chair for me and my class! If this online class for young readers is of interest for your child, head to LearnWithJillian.com and check out @learnwithjillian to learn more.

Our theme for this #storyformedfriday is friendship and I find that books are the best ways to show kids the value of life giving friendships. Friends are such a gift and there are seasons we make them easily, other times we may struggle, and most times we find ourselves friends with those whom we least expect. I switched schools quite a bit growing up and so I know the butterfly feeling of “who will be my friend?” quite well, but the beauty of being the new girl so often, is that it made me so empathetic later in life to others who were new (to my job, to my city, etc). My mom always said: you don’t need hundreds of friends, you just need to find that one person who is also needing a friend. And like most things, she was right. 💫
✨
Some of our favorite books (old and new) on friendship:
A Little Princess
Charlotte’s Web
Freya + Zoose
The Secret Garden
The Pooh Story Book
The Very Last Castle
Cookies & Milk
Frog and Toad books
✨

Welcome to our #storyformedfridays book loop where we’ll be helping you to nurture a story formed life for you and your family.

Every other week, we’ll be sharing our families’ favorite books and today we’re sharing the stories and books that have formed us and our families. ☺️

When I think back on my childhood, books like Nancy Drew, The Babysitter Club, and American Girl flood my mind. I have vivid memories of reading all of these, but it’s the memory of sitting on the floor with my classmates for storytime and hanging on to every word my second-grade teacher read to us from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe that I remember most often. And it’s this kind of memory that I want my own children to have. One that will stay with them well into adulthood and foster a love for books.

Recently, my husband joked that my library card is my most prized possession. And though it’s not true, it at least reassured me that I have created a home—an environment—where books are welcomed and treasured.

And when I think about the books that we enjoy most as a family—the ones that are always picked and have carved out their own space in our hearts—I can’t help but smile for they are ones that tell stories of:

✨ A life of faith (Little Pilgrim’s Big Journey)
✨ God’s love and the wonders of His world (God Bless You & Good Night and This I Know)
✨ Classic tales (Aesop’s Stories for Little Children)
✨ Appreciating things and people and discovering one’s own talents (The Raft)
✨ Love, compassion, and friendship (The Rag Coat, A Sick Day for Amos McGee, Frog and Toad, and Like Me)

It’s my heart to raise children who love the Lord, people, and books; and to come alongside others whose hearts are the same.

We’re so glad you’re here! Won’t you join us?

Welcome to our #storyformedfridays book loop where we’ll be helping you to nurture a story formed life for your and your children 📚

Every second Friday we’ll be sharing our family’s favourite books using #storyformedfridays

Today we’ll be sharing about stories and books which have formed us and our families 📖

We’re all formed by stories. Whether it’s the stories spoken over us, the stories we tell ourselves, or by the greatest story ever told - of God and His great love for us.

In our home, we read for our love of God, and every story we explore is viewed through the lens of the Bible.

To live truly enriched story formed lives, it’s paramount that the books we nurture ourselves and families with direct our hearts towards the true storyteller, Jesus.

As Ruth Sawyer said, we read “stories that make for wonder. Stories that make for laughter. Stories that stir one within with an understanding of the true nature of courage, of love, of beauty. Stories that make one tingle with high adventure, with daring, with grim determination, with the capacity of seeing danger through to the end. Stories that bring our minds to kneel in reverence; stories that show the tenderness of true mercy, the strength of loyalty, the unmawkish respect for what is good.”

And so, here is a selection of stories which have powerfully formed my family. Books for girlhood, adolescence, early motherhood, book clubs and homeschool. These are the stories I’ve enjoyed reading to my children, and my children’s personal favourites.

Which stories have formed you? 📚

One thing I was not expecting when starting this podcast was the amazing homeschool community I found right here on Instagram!! There are so many inspiring people encouraging me (as a homeschooler myself) everyday and I thought I would share some accounts with you! - I couldn’t fit everyone on this post so I will be making more in the future! Thank you to all these creators for breaking homeschooling stereotypes and bringing such inspiration to the homeschool community! 💗
