CENTRE STAGE WITH @thereal_lylamiklos MINI REVIEW What: Sisters of ‘78 When: Sep 30 – Oct 18, 2026 Where: @theatreaquarius Address: 190 King William St, Hamilton, ON When I first heard about the World Premiere of the brand-new Canadian play “Sisters of ‘78” at the @blythfestivaltheatre this summer I was both intrigued and excited. I was excited because the subject matter of women fighting for their rights as workers spoke directly to my labour activist heart. I was intrigued because I had never heard about this historic Canadian labour struggle before. One that was an intersection of both women and workers’ rights. I was thrilled to hear that this show would then travel to my hometown of Hamilton to be Theatre Aquarius’ season opener. Seeing the epic struggles that the women who worked at Fleck Manufacturing’s automotive manufacturing plant in Centralia, ON brought to life on stage was an emotional ride. The overt sexism from the men around them. The sexual harassment in the workplace. The unsafe work conditions. The poverty level wages. The political interference from the government. The police violence. I wish we could just view these events as a time capsule of our past, but sadly all of these issues are still as relevant as ever. The audience on opening night was very invested in the unfolding of events on stage and were cheering, chanting, clapping and hollering their support for the women on stage organizing to unionize their workplace. I would have been disappointed if there was anything less from a labour town like Hamilton. The script by @kristendasilva11 brilliantly finds the right balance of humour in what could have been a deeply depressing and serious story. Sean Mulcahy’s set and costume designs are inventive and innovative. @maryfrancismoore’s direction keeps the action moving. She also slows things down so moments of intimacy are allowed to breathe. Deftly keeping us invested in the very real stakes at play. The ensemble of women on stage (Madison Hayes-Crook, Cara Hunter, Alyssa LeClair, Kait Post, Geoffrey Pounsett, Kirstyn Russelle and Shaina Silver-Baird) are the beating heart of the show and we believe every moment they are on stage.

It's been seven years since Blyth Festival last took a show on tour, and tonight "Sisters of '78" opens @theatreaquarius in Hamilton. Getting here took a huge amount of work from so many people, and it's an achievement every one can be proud of. If the two preview performances are anything to go by, this story is landing in the Hammer. The cheers, the laughter, the standing ovations... it's ringing all the bells. Thank you to everyone who helped bring this show from Blyth to Hamilton. Here's to opening night!
