It’s that Nacho time of year again! October 21st is the International Day of the Nacho, the perfect time to make Ignacio Anaya’s Nacho’s Special. All you’ll need is a freshly fried tortilla, cheese and a slice of jalapeño. ¡Buen provecho!

As we countdown to Halloween, I am THRILLED to share one of our favorite picture books for spooky season. It’s pages hold a bit of magic, a bunch of heart and a whole lot of fun!

👀 The Wild Ones
✍️+🎨 Megan an Jorge Lacero

The Wild Ones are Valentina, Jasmine, Andy and Xander - a group of monster-obsessed besties who live in the Wild Oaks Apartment Building. Every weekend the quartet get together to talk about the local monster who is rumored to be living in the nearby forest. Each Wild Ones has a different theory about who this mysterious beast is - Valentina knows it is definitely La Tunda who is Colombian just like her, Xander is convinced it is the fiery Haitian monster Loogaroo, Andy hopes his Irish Boxty will lure out the Banshee and Jasmine knows that the Indian vampire-witch, Vetal would go batty for her Chai. But one Saturday, the friends discover something even scarier than any of these monsters…developers plan to tear down their beloved apartment building. Will they be able to enlist the help of their friendly neighborhood monsters and save Wild Oaks?

Set against the backdrop of Halloween celebrations, The Wild Ones is a perfect spooky season read that celebrates the power of friendship, cultural traditions and standing up for what matters. It’s a fun read that also has a lot of heart and creates opportunities to talk about monsters and cuisine from four different and unique cultures. (My Irish-American kids were excited to see the Banshee make an appearance!)

Both Megan and Jorge Lacera have a strong commitment to increasing representation in children’s books - creating stories that allow children to see bilingual and Latino children as main characters. In centering Valentina as the narrator and seamlessly weaving in the Spanish language they have brilliantly created a spunky, brave and clever Latina protagonist that all children can look up too. Likewise, the diverse friend group is bonded by their shared love of monsters and connection to place, yet they are able to joyfully participate in cultural exchange.

The Wild Ones is a great spooky season read that is sure to hang around long after!

📚10 children’s books to help your kids explore Latino cultures 🌎

One of my best ways to help kids learn about the world is through books. Books can introduce our kids to people, places, traditions, languages, music, and experiences beyond their own — all from the comfort of home. 📚

For Hispanic Heritage Month, I’m sharing 10 children’s books that explore different aspects of Latino identity and culture.

(Be sure to check also out parts 1 & 2 - T.V. and Movies)

You don’t need a passport to help your kids see the world differently. Sometimes, all you need is a library card. 📖

✨ Save this list for your next library trip!

💬 Have you read any of these books with your kids? What books would you add to the list?

Y’all, I LOVED watching these kids lean in. Their questions! The things they noticed!

I shared a bit of my author journey, why I wrote Hues of You: An Activity Book for Learning About the Skin You’re In, and read a few of my favorite pages😍

@Brownicity donated 3 books to stock the shelves:
📖 All the Colors We Are by Katie Kissinger
📖 The History of We by Nikkolas Smith
📖 Tan to Tamarind: Poems About the Color Brown by Malathi Michelle Iyengar

A big thank you 🙏🏾 to the parents who took home Hues of You so their kids can keep exploring with curiosity about themselves & others. The learning keeps going. 💛

Take a book. Leave a book. Share a story.
