Winning Teams vs Winning Programs

There is a big difference to this. And the state of college football is leaning towards building winning TEAMS rather than establishing long term success through development of your players.

Now the recruiting has shifted to finding the best players through the transfer portal, finding how much to can pay through rev share, and then winning THAT season.

In some ways it’s brought a lot of parity. In some ways it’s hurting the players who NEED development!

The old college football fan in me is sad to see it shift. But I’m also excited about where we are because of how many teams can compete for a championship (I mean think about it, Indiana just won a National Championship…..INDIANA!!!!)

It’s just weird though. These coaches have had to shift everything completely in the way they go about hiring coaches, the way they recruit, and the way they develop. It’s a “win now” type of deal and it’s not changing any time soon.

What happens when you give a 17-year-old athlete a LOT of money before they’ve even graduated high school?

Welcome to the new era of college athletics.

NIL has created some incredible opportunities for student-athletes. But it’s also introduced an entirely new set of challenges that go WAY beyond the playing field.

Jealousy. Greed. Envy. Distractions. Identity.

In Episode 478 of The Gametime Guru, I spoke with Mike Miller, Director of Athlete Development at Baylor University, about how NIL is changing the conversations coaches and athletic departments need to have with their athletes.

And one thing really stood out to me.

It’s not necessarily that student-athletes are BUSIER today. It’s that there are MORE things competing for their attention.

That’s why having the right people, systems, and support around these young athletes is so important.

What do YOU think? Are we doing enough to prepare young athletes for the money and responsibilities that come with NIL?

Follow: @gametimeguru for more conversations about college sports, athlete development, leadership, and the stories behind the game.

What if you spend your entire career preparing for a championship moment that never comes?

That’s the reality for so many athletes.

You train. You sacrifice. You study. You put in the work every single day, preparing for an opportunity that isn’t guaranteed.

But what happens when your playing career ends? Does that preparation mean anything?

Absolutely.

On Episode 478 of The Gametime Guru Podcast, I sat down with Mike Miller, Director of Athlete Development at Baylor University, and we discussed one of the most valuable lessons athletics can teach us.

Prepare for championship-level opportunities, even when you don’t know if they’ll ever come.

That mentality doesn’t have to end when you hang up the cleats. It transfers into your career, your relationships, your leadership, and whatever comes next in life.

Because when your opportunity finally arrives, you don’t want to START preparing.

You want to BE prepared.

We dive deeper into athlete development, career transitions, and lessons that extend far beyond the playing field.

Here’s my question for you:

Are you preparing for the opportunity you WANT, or just the opportunities you already HAVE?

He’s not big. But man he’s passionate and loves to play football! He loves his teammates and loves being out on the field.

One of my favorite shots here was actually when he was pumped after his teammate Kace got a nice run back on a kickoff return and he was stoked for him!! He loves when his teammates make big plays and it’s cool for me to see that!

I’m hard on this kid a lot. But he knows it’s because I love him so much. He is coachable and above all he’s PASSIONATE.

The other thing about this kid is that he doesn’t shy away from competition. Competition is genuinely uncomfortable for most of us. That’s why people try and avoid it a lot.

Sports have a natural way of teaching us to get right in the middle of it all and compete together. You truly don’t have a choice when you’re on the field. You either meet competition in the middle or you don’t play. But that’s why the kids play the game, because they actually enjoy it :)

Massive shoutout to @shana.flores with @s.f.photography208 for the incredible photos each week of the teams. She does phenomenal work behind the lens!! 🤝

This last year I’ve seen Decker grow up so much because of the game of football! I pray he just continues to take the life lessons that continue to come from the experiences (good and bad) and that he takes the love of the game with him forever!

La Habra QB - DJ Mitchell 🏈

Today I have the chance to circle back with DJ Mitchell who I spoke with back in 2023.

The first time we had a conversation, DJ hadn’t started high school yet and he was wondering what the speed of the game was going to be like. Today in our circle back as he’s now a senior leading La Habra high school in California, he talks about how the speed of the game has slowed down for him throughout his high school career.

This episode is being presented by: @nationsbestfootball

He didn’t set out to become a football agent.

One chance encounter in a sneaker store helped launch what became a 36-year career representing players and coaches across football.

Brian Levy has seen the industry evolve through the NFL, college football, NIL, the transfer portal, and now even high school athletes entering a completely different financial world.

But through all of that change, one thing has remained at the center of his career:

Relationships.

Trust.

Loyalty.

In our full conversation, Brian talks about how he built his career, why he believes athletes need people who will tell them what they NEED to hear instead of what they WANT to hear, and why success to him is about the impact you have on people, not just money or clients.

This is the story of Brian Levy.

Watching film in football for my son at the age of ten is such a good opportunity for him that can be translated into real life.

See in sports, when a mistake is made (and at the age of ten there are a lot of them), it’s easy in the moment for the mistake to be magnified because of the emotions of the game.

Watching film however, will remove those emotions and allow you to see that your mistakes aren’t as bad as you may have initially thought. Sometimes they are, but often you’ll realize how well you did too.

Life is very much the same way. You make mistakes that seem terrible in the moment. But when you pull the emotions out of it you’ll realize it wasn’t as bad as you may have thought.

Hoping as I navigate things with my son in football, that he can utilize film study to help him correct his mistakes, move on from them, and realize that there’s also a lot of GOOD things that go unnoticed. That way he continues to build confidence as he prepares for his next games moving forward.

Also shoutout @garrettkroon for the hat!

Sometimes the conflict isn’t really about the thing people SAY it’s about.

Bill Taylor calls this going “Below the Line.”

An athlete says they want more playing time.
A parent is upset about a coaching decision.
A player asks for more scholarship money.

That’s the issue on the surface.

But underneath it might be something completely different: respect, feeling valued, fear, pressure, trust, expectations, or wanting to feel heard.

That’s where real conflict resolution begins.

If you only address the surface-level problem, you might “solve” the issue and still leave the person feeling worse than before.

Great coaches and leaders learn to ask better questions, understand the person behind the problem, and figure out what’s really driving the conflict.

This was one of my favorite concepts from my conversation with Bill Taylor, author of Managing Sports Conflict: 5 Tools to Master Conflict.

🎙️ Full Episode 475 of The Gametime Guru is available now.

What do you think: how often do we argue about the surface issue when the REAL issue is something deeper?
