There are only a few days left to see “Latency”(on view through September 18) which is the thesis exhibition for the MFA Photography program at Parsons School of Design! Below is the blurb I had written in my summation of the success of this show for Whitehot Magazine as part of a special essay on the importance of MFA & BFA thesis exhibitions. Also, thank you very much to the student-artists Nazli Erbes, Tania Quintanilla, and Sarah Gray for walking me through their works along with that of the rest of their star cohort of 25 artists!

Much of this year’s cohort upends the traditional notion of photography as a two-dimensional medium, with its spatial parameters explored in works that take on decidedly sculptural dimensions. Tania Quintanilla’s mixture of cut photo prints, 3D-printed materials, and charcoal scattered across the wall speaks to the silent transformations undergone by women through aging. Elsewhere, Eugene Lee’s laser-etched acrylic cards contain imprints of familiar places now captured in dayglo shades while arranged in stacked formation akin to life-sized Lego bricks.

Since its invention in the early 1800s, photography has evolved from merely capturing moments. Over time, photography became intertwined with other traditional art mediums and slowly became a more accepted medium in the fine arts space. Now, with Parsons’ 2026 Photography MFA thesis show, Latency continues to expand what photography can be, literally.

The twenty-five artists utilize photography as a foundation for exploring memories, identity, and reexamination, telling a cohesive story by drawing on their backgrounds in other art mediums, such as ceramics, graphic design, film, and even fashion, just to name a few. They all use some form of reflection to enhance their photography, whether through mirrors, Mylar, or metaphorically looking internally and at the world around them.

Introducing Eugene Lee (@leeugene_art) Parsons MFA Photo 2026

Eugene Lee (b. South Korea) is an artist whose practice operates at the intersection of photography, objects, and installation. Beginning with a BFA in Ceramics and expanding into MFA in Photography, her work is deeply informed by the dialogue between these two disciplines. Through themes of childhood playfulness and a sense of anticipated nostalgia, she investigates the materiality of the photographic image. By layering and engraving images onto paper and acrylic, Lee transforms them into tactile, sculptural forms that invite physical engagement beyond act of seeing. Redefining photography as a spatial medium, she creates immersive experiences that employ light and color to explore perception and the dynamics of space. Her work has been exhibited internationally at notable venues, including Gallery Meme (Seoul), Gallery 881 (Vancouver), One Art Space (New York), and Mana Contemporary (New Jersey).
