POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

My heart is brimming after an inspiring weekend in the foothills at the SCBWI Lines & Letters Conference. I’m not sure a summary will do the experience justice, but here are a few highlights worth noting:

• Connecting with @heatherbrockmanlee for 1:1 feedback about my dummy and portfolio and learning that our winding journeys had similar waypoints. I feel so encouraged to climb to the next cairn. 🫶

• Being reminded that “Critique Groups Are Life.” And, meeting new friends who I hope to get to know better through connects and the many opportunities offered by the Rocky Mountain Chapter. Also, how do I meet the magical ✨ Kim Tomsic? She sounds like the BEES KNEES!

• Learning about a methodical way to craft my own unique style—@leewhiteillo this made my systems loving enneagram 1 soul sing. 🤌

• Learning about the Chinese character “Ren” in @pacylin‘s poetic and poignant keynote—the element of a knife placed over the heart to represent forbearance. The invocation to remain vulnerable and to bleed a small bit on the page when we create, as we persevere, was so moving.

• Stepping inside Sylvie Frank’s editorial mind in the picture book pacing workshop. Seeing and practicing with other people’s examples unlocked something in me.

• The invitation to serve others through volunteering and advocacy. I am excited to put @julierowanzoch’s family postcards to good use writing about how much I abhor banning books.

If we connected this weekend, I hope our paths cross again soon! I will do my best to follow up with folks, but please also feel free to reach out to me!

Also a tiny note about my doodles… The girl in the zebra leo was me circa ‘91 dreaming about life as an artist, and the mother is me trying to hold that dream with care.

What a fun and inspiring conference, plus epic friend reunion! Loved seeing everyone and sharing the collective knowledge. (I can’t tag Kate DiCamillo, but her keynote was 🤯. Amazing!) #kidlit #scbwi #childrensbooks

This weekend at @scbwirockymtn was incredible!!! Listening to Kate DiCamillo and @pacylin speak was such a delightful and human moment - I felt truly seen as a mother artist/author, sitting in a crowd of supportive new friends, laughing and sighing as one. Learning about book development from incredible editors like @sfrank0411 was mind blowing. Being delighted and filled with encouragement, like a sunny day with blue sky, by @laurentlinn to the beauty and depth of creating illustrations that truly have heart by @heatherbrockmanlee and the fascinating world of line, shape, color and design by @leewhiteillo just to name a few! I was absolutely delighted and totally wiped out in a good way after every day!! And to top off the best weekend, my cherry on the cake was meeting my phenomenal and oh so delightful agent @loriasteel of @steelworksliterary for the first time in person!!!!!! I can’t even begin to express my gratitude and appreciation for the love, warmth, support and kindness I’ve received from this community. And lastly… thanks to my partner in crime for all things art, sisterhood and shenanigans @betonycoonsart - I couldn’t do this with you!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Wow. Summer sure sped by, didn't it?

These three cards sum up where I've been and what I've been up to. A little adventuring: a week at the cabin, time in the woods, picking berries, reading books. Some rest: leaning into slow movement and staying still, waiting for the next thing rather than chasing it. And some very-much-needed self-care and self-appreciation.

Tarot is still here, as always! I've done party readings (so. much. fun) and booked readings this summer, attended @thetarotdiagnosis Summer Solstice Summit for some excellent learning and reflection, and sharing with my community spaces.

How has your summer been? What cards describe it?

And my books are open for readings if you're looking for insight and collaboration!

MONDAY MUSE! Lee White. Whew. What a magical talent.

Have you seen this guy’s work? His illustrations transport me to a place where time seems to stand still, and I get lost in the whimsical worlds he creates. His masterful use of colour, texture, and playful detail transforms every piece into something truly enchanting.

Based in Denver, Colorado, Lee spends his days breathing life into his wonderfully imaginative world. While watercolour is his primary medium, he also incorporates ink, coloured pencil, collage, and digital techniques to create richly layered illustrations that feel both timeless and fresh.

Lee has illustrated more than 27 children’s books and has created commercial work for an impressive list of clients, including Marks & Spencer, Amazon, Laika, United Airlines, Verizon, Disney, and National Geographic.

Whether you discover his work on the pages of a children’s book or hanging on gallery walls around the world, one thing is certain: Lee has a remarkable gift for storytelling through his art. Every illustration invites you to step into a whimsical world where imagination takes the lead.

Guys, do yourself a favour and go check him out! ✨ @leewhiteillo
