My favorite artist @legitconcerns has his wonderful poodle artwork up at @meow__wolf ! It was a bit emotional seeing it as sadly he lost his life. I have had conversations with him in the past and I’m glad that I was able to let him know just how much I appreciated and admired his work! One of my favorite pieces from @legitconcerns (RIP). This particular doodle ended up in my hands without him even knowing I was a plastic surgeon. His observations about the world around us and the corresponding drawings, always combined honest, real talk along with just the right amount of lightheartedness making the world feel less heavy. Every time I’ve looked at this piece throughout the years it always seems relevant. Again in this dynamic time, it hits. I’ve been waiting for the day to have an office of my own to put this up in. Get ready for some quirky, fun art @ehnpride.

This Sunday! @whistlestopbar 4-6 pm! hosted by me @andydrae and @m_m_m_mike_sharona of @wildwildwets We’re doing a listening party and West Coast record release for HELLO DARLIN’ :: a collection of my beloved brother’s music and art, as originally recorded by him, and as covered by the MIKEY RAE FAMILY BAND in tribute to his work and legacy. Mike will DJ for us in and out and we’ll listen to the album in full somewhere in the middle. And thanks so much to @drewandrews for helping me organize this. It’s a meaningful way for me to keep him here with us somehow ❤️🌈🎸🏜️🤘😎👽

** MIKEY RAE LISTENING PARTY ** Thursday June 20th we’ve got a special event at the shop- a listening & record release party for MIKEY RAE and the Mikey Rae Family Band’s double LP! The LP contains unreleased music by Mikey and friends, plus artwork by the man himself. It’s a remarkable tribute and keepsake produced by his family with help with many folks and n Santa Fe and also just a really cool object. We’ll have copies of the album available, refreshments and will be listening to the album and hearing a few words from friends and perhaps a song or two will be performed as well. This is the first entry- I have another of only signs🤷🏼‍♀️ Bottom center is art from @meowwolfsantafe by @legitconcerns RIP Mikey Rae, whose odd graffiti decorates the hallway. 🩷🩷🩷Middle right 🦴🦴🦴is by another @meow__wolf artist William Robison @errormill , who kindly recreated his art that was lost in my daughter's home in the #czucomplexfire in 2020. @meow__wolf is a kind of vortex of oddness, so no coincidence that it made into #fjninethatsodd 🤷🏼‍♀️😂 Center left is art by Rick Bartow at @heardmuseum , bottom right is insect collection at Groundswell Cafe. 🥰🐶 Thanks Sandi and host @flots_n_jets

Mikey Rae was an exceptional human. Nearly a year after his death, I’m still unraveling the ways his life and his friendship left me forever changed. His exuberance and generosity were unparalleled—like the power and potency of five people in just one body. He was indescribably kind, in a soft, nonjudgmental, cuddly sort of way. He made everyone feel worthy of his time because he felt deeply that they were, in fact, fundamentally worthy. He was generous with his art, and through that generosity, he conveyed that the point of his creative practice was to spread humor, optimism, and beauty to his friends—not to achieve egocentric status as a successful artist, although he certainly was one. He never missed an opportunity to vocalize the value and impact his friends had on him. He believed in making magic, not waiting for it. I miss him tremendously. On Saturday, we gathered to celebrate his birthday and his art, and being surrounded by so many loved ones new + old who brought works of his to hang was incredibly powerful—like being ensconced in an enveloping experience of his presence. I think we hung hundreds of pieces; we ran out of wall space early on, which meant we resorted to hanging art of his on any surface, anywhere, furthering the sense of being wrapped up in Mikey magic. My heart is so grateful to Mikey’s wonderful family and in particular his brother Andrew @andydrae for having the vision for this true celebration of life. Thank you, thank you, to all who steward the blessing of Mikey’s spirit and keep his gifts alive in your lives and in our community. ❤️

Mikey Rae’s birthday BYO art show was yesterday ❤️‍🔥 It was a fabulous, very Mikey brand of sweet chaos. The idea was to bring what Mikey art you have, get it photographed and put up for all to see, and take it home again (: Such a sweet way of bringing the community together. Mikey gave away so many drawings! I can’t even begin to show you all the pictures I took, and I only took pictures of a fraction of the drawings on display. He was such a fount of creative energy. In a perfect expression of that spirit, the evening ended with a joyful, meandering set by “The Mikey Rae Family Band”. (Apologies for not getting good pictures of it.) 8 or 10 of Mikey’s friends swapped instruments back and forth and belted out some of his original songs and some of his most beloved covers. It was messy and happy and so very very Mikey. On one hand, it all obviously made me painfully aware of Mikey’s absence (I imagined him doing some outlandish dancing, warbly crooning, and a lot of winking). But it was also so strikingly beautiful watching this big group of friends grinning as they appeared to have an amazing time playing crazy music together. Mikey brought them together. Mikey was so very alive in that room last night, his friends dancing and drawing, ad libbing and jamming, laughing and messing things up and giving gifts and beaming at each other. 💝 It was nice to sorta see you, Mikey. We miss you, I hope you’re having a glorious time out there ❤️‍🔥🌙🐩🎸🌌 Thank you to everyone who organized this event 🩷
