The future is beginning to take shape on South Mountain. Lehigh President Joseph J. Helble ‘82 was joined by Board Chair James R. Maida ‘85 P’17 P’19, Trustees Paul A. Camuti ‘83 and Eric A. Clement ‘99, Provost Nathan Urban and other university leaders to celebrate the groundbreaking for the East Hill Residence Halls.

The project will add capacity for 371 students in four halls nestled on the mountain within an ecologically restored landscape. All Lehigh students will also benefit from improved pedestrian walkways along surrounding roads and new shared outdoor amenities on the site.

East Hill will welcome its first class of Mountain Hawks in fall of 2028.

How do we capture a moment in time? What can images tell us about memory and perception?

First year students in the “What is Reality?” class created cyanotype images after learning about the history of photography and the science of human memory.

Working with this camera-less form of photography shows the intersection of art and psychology and enriches our understanding of reality, showing that both memory and images are unique constructions of our experiences.

Professor Almut Hupbach (Psychology) and Professor of Practice William Crow (Art, Architecture and Design) designed and co-teach What is Reality? Students interrogate this timeless question through art and museum experiences, exploration of cognitive processes and underlying brain mechanisms, and hands-on experiential learning.

This course is one of several first-year seminars in the College of Arts and Sciences focused on Big Questions, an initiative that supports enhanced interdisciplinary teaching, learning and research at Lehigh. Four students sit outdoors near Taylor Gym, Zoellner Arts Center and Rauch Business Center at Lehigh University on a wooden bench beneath the shade of large, leafy trees on a sunny day. A paved walkway curves past the bench, leading toward a green hillside lawn. Text overlays read "CLASS OF 2030," "PHOTO ROLL 10/26 LOCAL TIME 10:00 ROUTE TYPE: CLASS," and "FIRST YEAR SEMINAR: WHAT IS REALITY?"

When @NASA launched Artemis II (@nasaartemis), the first lunar flyby in 50 years, Lehigh alumni were behind the controls and in leadership roles making history happen.

Swipe through to meet Mark Riddle ’87, operations engineer supporting NASA's Kennedy Space Center (@kennedyspacecenter), and Christina Mancinelli ’03 ’04, vice president of global communications and navigation at Lockheed Martin (@lockheedmartin). See how their journeys from South Mountain led them to the frontiers of human space exploration.

“[Exploration] is what makes us human, curiosity, wondering why things are the way they are,” said Terry Hart (@ihartaerospace) ’68 H’88 Pʼ27, former NASA astronaut, teaching full professor of mechanical engineering and mechanics and founder of Lehigh’s master’s in aerospace engineering program.

Then ➡️Now. Swipe for Reveal

We went digging through the archives…and got a little carried away. 👀
We found some classic Lehigh moments and challenged current students to recreate them, in the same places, with a little 2026 Lehigh Store style mixed in!

🤎Same Campus. Same Lehigh Spirit. Different Era.🤍

And now we’re wondering…where should we go next? 👀

Which recreation was your favorite?!

THANK YOU to all who came out last Thursday evening to celebrate the launch of LUAG’s newly-published centennial catalog, “Creativity & Connection: Lehigh University Art Galleries at 100”!

We were thrilled raise a glass with you and share a selection of excerpts from the book, read by the contributors themselves.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Published by Hirmer/University of Chicago Press, “Creativity & Connection” highlights 100 diverse works from the LUAG collection — now spanning over 20,000 objects in total — pairing them with reflective essays by students, faculty, staff, artists, and community members.

Illuminating the collection’s depth and evolving narrative, the coffee table-style book brings to life iconic works collected by LUAG over the past century.

Get your copy online — and keep your eyes open for availability in The Lehigh Store later this fall.
