Review: Lei, Doyers Street.

I judge a restaurant, or wine bar, on two things. Both occur within the first 5 minutes of crossing over the threshold.

One: are they accommodating to a random walk-in? (usually always me)
Two: are there bag hooks beneath the bar?

The first is a measure of how much they love people. The second is a measure of how much they love women. Personally, I’m a great fan of both.

This was a special and random evening to celebrate something I didn’t expect. Tenuous, and perhaps fragile, like a birthday. We went to Bridges first and, upon hearing the two hour wait, we circled back over to Lei.

God, am I ever happy we did.

First and foremost, Lei is incredibly cute. It’s a jewel box of a restaurant. Between its all burgundy interior and loud acoustics, I felt like I’d been trapped inside a ruby. In a good way though.

I believe in the power of a glass of red wine (and have since high school). Just that is enough to make the restaurant a success in my eyes but, and we truly were not expecting this for reasons I can’t remember, the food was insanely good.

We started with the chilled celtuce. Neither of us had tried celtuce before but we were curious and, I’m happy to report, fortune favors the bold. It was crazy delicious.

Then we had the beef carpaccio “Couple’s Delight”. I genuinely am a bit of a beef carpaccio & tartar connoisseur (again, blame it on France) and this was one of the best I’ve ever had. It was ringed by a mountain of fresh herbs so high I had the impulse to yodel.

Finally, we had the sweet and sour beef short rib. I was expecting to hit a dud at this point. I find most NYC restaurants have a 2:1 great to mediocre dish ratio.

Not so with Lei.

I’m thrilled to report it was delicious. I’m grateful to say the evening was perfect. I’m happy to announce that Lei is lovely. I’d like to reiterate that I love New York.

It’s a head-to-head blind tasting as Empire Regional Manager @chrisraftery takes on Sales Rep @chinochubs, drinking a single vineyard white from one of Auckland’s first wineries.

With its wines often mistaken for Burgundy in blind tastings, see how Chris and Asher stack up at Chinatown’s @lei.wine 👀
