Today, October 7, would have been my Grandpa Charlie Mayell’s birthday. ❤️‍🔥

Around Oak Lake, they called him “The Oak Lake Country Troubadour.”

And in four days, October 11, it will be seven years since I lost my Dad, Larry Mayell.

When I was nine, I spent part of a summer with my Grandpa Charlie and Grandma Aldora. I was supposed to “smarten up” my very spirited little self.

Instead, they gave me one of the first places where I felt completely safe to be me.

Jamborees. Retirement homes. Campgrounds. Anywhere there was somewhere to sing, perform and connect with people.

That little girl already knew.

Music.
Performing.
Writing.
Connection.
Community.

The stage has always felt like home.

And since the day Grandpa Charlie died, I have worn his belt every time I perform.

So watching this moment back hits differently.

I’m standing in the place where I feel most like myself, wearing Grandpa Charlie’s belt, singing:

“LFG, I miss you Dad.”

Grandpa Charlie was my Dad’s dad.

And I know Dad got that same “watch us” spirit from him.

Grandpa Charlie gave me a safe place to let my light shine.

Dad became the person beside me saying:

“They said we couldn’t.

Watch us.”

LFG was never just a hype phrase between Dad and me.

It meant exactly that.

They said we couldn’t.

Watch us.

And we did.

We built things people told us we couldn’t build, and we did it together.

After losing both of them, and after having to rebuild so much of myself and my life, I’m still here.

Still singing.
Still creating.
Still connecting.
Still carrying them with me.

Maybe that is what legacy is.

Not just remembering the people we love.

But carrying forward the parts of ourselves they made safe enough to exist.

Happy birthday, Grandpa Charlie. ❤️‍🔥

The Oak Lake Country Troubadour.

And Dad, with seven years approaching on October 11…

They said we couldn’t.

Watch me.

LFG.

I miss you Dad.

Autumn MacKay stopped by Sunrise Records ahead of Music Day In Canada to share an in‑store performance of her latest single, Four Leaf Clover, and talk about the records that have influenced her songwriting. Four Leaf Clover is available now on all streaming platforms.

Music Day In Canada is a nationwide celebration of local artists and the communities that support them. Each city hosts its own showcase, bringing together emerging voices, hometown favourites, and the people who make live music possible. Truro’s event at The Commune, hosted by Meghan Lynn Music, is part of that coast‑to‑coast series, shining a spotlight on artists creating and performing right here in Nova Scotia.

Music Day In Canada | September 26 | The Commune (Truro, NS) | Featuring Autumn MacKay and The Jazz Enthusiast

Autumn MacKay is a rising singer songwriter from Truro, Nova Scotia whose distinct vocals and reflective folk leaning style have made her one of the most exciting emerging voices in the province’s music scene. Her honest, emotionally grounded performances continue to connect with audiences across Nova Scotia.
