What an inspiring day at Black VegFest! 🌱✨

Mercy For Animals was proud to stand alongside and sponsor this incredible community event—a vibrant space that nurtures and welcomes everyone to come exactly as they are.

More than a festival, Black VegFest is a powerful tribute to Black August: honoring Black freedom fighters and the movement to end oppression. From deep conversations to shared meals, we loved connecting, learning, and celebrating together. Thank you, Black VegFest, for creating such a transformative and welcoming space!

I got to attend @blackvegfest today & it was EPIC! 🌱✊🏿

I still remember when @omowaleadewale hit me up to help design the Black VegFest (BVF) logo. He built this amazing community event out of his organizing work with G.A.ME (Omowale, myself, Frances & a few others are founding members), along with life experiences that made creating this festival a no-brainer for our community.

The first BVF was held in Brooklyn in summer 2018. From the beginning, it was BIGGER than vegan food. It created a space centered on Black community, culture, education, health, activism, Black August & access, while showing that plant-based living can be presented through our own voices and experiences.

After organizing with BVF for years, I’ll never forget 2019, when approximately 6,000 people came together in Brooklyn! 🔥

BVF shows what organizing can accomplish when education becomes action & an idea becomes a space where thousands can learn, celebrate & build. Omowale got me into organizing and activism, and I’m forever grateful for that! 🙏🏿

BVF is held during Black August... ON PURPOSE!

Rooted in Black resistance & the revolutionary movements of the 1960s & 70s, Black August honors political prisoners, freedom fighters, organizers and those who sacrificed in the struggle for liberation. It isn’t only about remembering history. It’s about continuing the work.

Ever since I met Omowale, he’s been doing the work and pushing me to get involved. In parallel, for the last 25 years I’ve used Hip Hop, community organizing, culture & education to bring people together, especially young people. I’ve also made it a priority to support & protect women in music as a big brother, while connecting with artists worldwide to show that Hip Hop is GLOBAL! 🌍

During Black August, we recommit ourselves to essential practices:

✊🏿 STUDY. FAST. TRAIN. FIGHT.

We honor those before us by continuing what they started. We study. We train. We organize. We teach. We resist. And we pass the knowledge to the next generation. This is not cosplay. Additionally, do not let the smiles fool you & this aint cosplay. “The revolution won’t be televised. It’s happening. Be stealthy. Love and light ❤️✊🏿💚
