Giacomo came to us seeking something a little more Honore De Balzac / Bridgerton / Beau Brummell and it was a challenge to find the right creamy white satin he was chasing but we got there. This is a bespoke commission where there is one piece of silk, like a thick ribbon, to be knotted as Honore De Balzac once noted, to reveal the owner’s unique sense of style. I made a deal with Giacomo - I would make it but it was his job to find his own knot because there are so many ways to tie it and I believe he’s done a fine job of it. #blacktie with a difference. Thanks Giacomo it was a pleasure to work with you and good luck with your writing ✍️.

And here’s Yalon marking up the salopettes preparing to cut - this is a remarkable thing that between his brain and his hands and some online tutoring he’s been able to get a good grasp on pattern making, cutting and sewing.
Wow wow. Thanks again @yalon_007 for taking on the challenge.

The age of the internet/socials is a double edged sword - on the one hand some of us - myself included - have lower attention spans - then there are the others - like Yalon - @yalon_007 - who taught himself how to tailor coats and trousers from YouTube.

Yalon came to us for a silk scarf some time ago. When he came in to collect a bow tie the other week he informed me that he had made his own trousers. I put to him a challenge - could he make the salopettes I wear skiing as a tailored trouser bib and brace and then raided my wool storage box for an open weave navy hop sack I’d bought in Biella, Italy.

Why the salopette? It’s a kind of chic way to wear our silk scarves as you tuck it into the bib and they keep everything neat and tidy - and no belts. We used on this one hardware from our cummerbunds.

It reminded me of when Churchill worked with Turnbull & Asser for a onesie that went viral in the menswear forums. And maybe there are some Australian hard yakka men who might think to themselves - hmmm - familiar territory - and I can wear them on date night. Silk scarf optional of course.

Possibly our most obscure product line we make and mainly for the Greeks and Greek Australians that we serve. Hand made in our Sydney Studio in Vaucluse. The customer requested purple amethyst and clear quartz and I feel a great honour - especially with the Hellenic crowd - when we are requested to make them. I’ve told the story before but I’ll tell it again - Amethystos approached Artemis, goddess of the hunt, protector of the chaste, asked her to prevent Dionysus from having his way with her. She turned Amethystos into clear quartz, when Dionysus realised he wouldn’t have his way he poured red wine onto her, which is how the Greeks figured purple amethyst to come to exist - though the story can be challenged by scholars I believe. Either way - Amethyst is said to be a stone for sobriety and wisdom, clear quartz for clarity of mind and purity. These ones are my personal ones. Bespoke orders +61413140994 . 📿

Congratulations to Sue who is the very first person to receive the Cranbrook silk scarf outside of headmistress Dr Johnstone - and what a great tour we had of the Studio from perfumes to silk scarves and more. Sue, I hope I didn’t chew your ear off. Thanks to Hayley @ Cranbrook for orchestrating the visit.

She came for the one in the window - 🏆 Annie Pope’s winning Australia design and she left with more than 1️⃣ … and I was sitting in the cafe next door minding my own business …. You know that saying “it happens when you least expect it” … sometimes it’s true. I’m going to mind my own business more often it seems. Thank you Evelyn for your support - she’s ordinarily an Hermes customer so it’s so refreshing when our quality is appreciated by the discerning. #silkscarf #lenoeudpapillon

At times I can’t myself believe what some of our customers write it’s perhaps part of my own insecurities that I’m somewhat distrusting of praise. I also feel if you get caught up in it you may get sloppy. But - I do like the idea that we remain personal to our customers whether by phone or text or in person at the Studio or on our instagram. Thank you for your endorsements - perhaps I overshare at times but you are always welcome to take a break from it all. +61413140994 for custom work. And thank you Lord Baltimore. I would like to change my first name to Lord sometimes - I’ve always thought it would make a difference when I’m making dinner reservations. 😃

The Design A Bow Tie Silk Competition Starts Now - Entries Close NYE 2026.

In 1999 the New Years Eve Sydney Harbour Bridge display was lit up with one word. Eternity. Words, so powerful, can resonate with people as strongly, in my opinion, as an image, sometimes stronger. There are passages of text which can still make me weep for just how beautifully they were written, Il Gattopardo springs to mind.

Our next competition is finding words, one word but up to 5 words. And design them into a 10cm squared design in a digital file that we can render and turn into a bow tie or neck tie. How you go about your design, the characters you choose, how you place them, whether you place a texture in the background, the font, the choice is completely yours. We are only looking for creativity and meaning. So accompanying it with a blurb will be helpful.

1000 AUD to the winner. A neck tie or bow tie sent to them upon completion of the silk.

Eternity - the chosen word of Arthur Strace, said to have been written on the streets of Sydney for 34 years continuously, more than 500,000 times, in the wee hours of the morning by a recovering alcoholic, a WW1 veteran, who heard a sermon on things that go beyond our lifetime, written with the impermanence of chalk, a reminder that everything decays and all humans pass through life, and raising the questions of what lies beyond, and perhaps challenging us as to how we want to live spiritually between now and when we no longer exist. It’s a good starting reference point. Good luck. All questions +61413140994

Jazz hands … my brother was the first to ever say to me “it is the duty of every wealthy man to give a job to the artisan” and whilst I don’t want to weigh into the 🤖 debate I was considering the other day about how much our hands are still involved in daily life. My barista, the guy that does our gardening, my tailor, my jeweller, the man that bakes my steak bacon and cheese pies (I try to stay away I promise). On some of our designs we are deploying 🤖 but then the winner of our first silk scarf competition, Kieran Davis @davis_davis_davis was all done by hand and the roll stitched on the hem, done by hand. So before we get anxious that all our jobs will be taken from us, perhaps we should do two things - consider how many hands are still involved in our daily lives and that we should support all those people that do use their hands each day to produce things that add value to our lives. And as the great Milton Friedman once spoke of the simple pencil ✏️ and how trade brings together people from all walks of life; from different countries, different faiths, different skill sets, to bring together graphite, rubber, wood, metals - combined into one product - so I consider that what we make is not just solely ours - it is the culmination of people working in Italy, Korea, Japan, Holland, China and Australia to bring you a finished product - each with their own specific skill set. #Bespoke #lenoeudpapillon #artisan #madeinaustralia
