"Oh... I wish you would"

A young male leopard (nearly two years old) was having a siesta on a branch. Then a troop of monkeys came by and started taunting him.

This was the look he was giving to the monkey that was closest to him.
The monkey clearly knew that the leopard can't get to it and continued to taunt him.
Eventually the troop of monkeys became silent, but still kept the leopard on their sight.

A a private leopard sighting before before 7:00 a.m?
Yes, please!
Our guests had this amazing young male leopard all to themselves for a good 20 minutes before anyone else turned up and the sighting kept on going for another 40 minutes after that also.
During that time the leopard was seen yawning multiple times and keeping close eye on what's going on around him.

Why do bears stand up on their hind legs?
Also, why do any animal stand up on their hind legs?
The main reason is, better visibility of the surrounding area.
I have seen this behavior even in leopards and it can be seen in animals from monkeys, mongooses to meerkats.

Having said that, this particular behavior we see in the video is slightly different. This is a threat response by the sloth bear. It is trying to make it self larger and more imposing, so that the other animal will back away.

I have seen sloth bears perform the same action with leopards and if one would search for videos of sloth bears fighting tigers in India, they would see the same behavior over there as well.

Imagine you see an animal double its size within one second. Do you really want to hang around to find out what happens in the next second. I don't want to take that risk.

However the crocodile on the video (Charlie) does not react quickly. He is a crocodile. So, it knows that it is the absolute king in that environment. The sloth bear wisely decided to avoid physical confrontation and move into the thicket.

Kuruttupandi female and her two cubs relaxing in the morning.
One can see the male cub clearly, but the female cub is sitting just behind the mother and her brother.
They have been very generous with their time and providing great sightings for visitors of Wilpattu National Park in the recent times.

Being a mother isn't easy...

This female leopard hunted the monkey as we were arriving in that area. She sprinted across the road and caught a monkey.
Everything was done and dusted within seconds.
She grabbed her prize and moved along the thicket.
Moving parallel to the road, so we knew she was going to cross the road. Otherwise she would have moved straight into the thicket.
We anticipated her movements and waited till she comes to the open, giving her plenty of space.
Because of the respect we showed, she gave us one of the best sightings in 2024.
