📻 Chinese Radio interview part 8 of 8📻 How can you help Palestine? Shoutout to the Singaporeans who have made immense efforts! 作为新加坡人，我们怎么能帮助巴勒斯坦人民？ Sign the petition calling @mfa_sg vivianbalakrishnan to recognise Palestine as a state. Link in profile bio. 签署请愿书，呼吁@mfa_sg vivianbalakrishnan 承认巴勒斯坦为一个国家。链接见个人资料。 UPDATE: WE HAVE EXCEEDED 10,000 SIGNATURES! KEEP GOING! 最新的消息：公开信已达到10,000签字！ 🚨About the interview🚨 In Nov 2024, a Chinese radio station invited Lepak Conversations for an interview on their open letter to Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan and public petition for Singapore to recognise the state of Palestine. As signatories to the open letter, Youth for Peace members, spoke on behalf of the LC team. Following local media guidelines, we were not allowed to call it a genocide and had to use the term 'conflict'. Unfortunately, the radio interview was pulled at the last minute by the Editor in Chief and was not allowed to be aired as they determined that their radio station was not suitable to air such sensitive and political issues. Nevertheless, we are very grateful to the radio producer for conducting the interview with us and permitting us to edit and post the interview recording, all in their best effort to support the petition. The objective of sharing this experience is to highlight the challenges that Singapore’s civil society faces as we navigate through Singapore's media landscape. Regardless, this will not hinder or discourage us from pursuing the Palestinian cause as we continue to call on the international community to speak up for human rights and to aid in rebuilding Gaza.

Education and awareness is the first step in confronting discrimination. And with the extensive range of resources out there, we owe it to ourselves to seek out that knowledge. To (hopefully) aid in this process, we have curated a list of posts from various Singaporean social media accounts that talk about the racial issues in our country. These resources provide incredible insight and give us a deeper understanding on why such issues still exist in our modern society. “To bring about change, you must not be afraid to take the first step. We will fail when we fail to try” — Rosa Parks

Trigger Warning: This post, and the article it quotes from, discusses sexual violence and institutional responses to reports of sexual violence. This includes mentions of victim-blaming, retraumatisation and procedures utilised in the criminal justice system. In this piece, Nur (a co-founder of @lepakconversations) writes about how the criminal justice system, and society at large, has a long way to go in caring for victims and acting justly in response to reports of sexual assault. "People do not understand that an acquittal or refusal to prosecute or charge, due to lack of evidence, does not necessarily mean the perpetrator did not commit the act. People do not understand that the questions asked during cross-examination in an effort to discredit the victim, does not make the victim a liar. People do not understand that while our Singapore courts and judges are fair and competent in serving justice based on the laws of the land, it is still possible for us to cause injustice to victims." She speaks at length about the progress that has been made in the criminal system's procedures of responding to reports of sexual assault, as someone who has been through law school, while acknowledging the lengths to which these procedures can retraumatise and prevent victims from coming forward. Visit the link in our bio to read more of this well-informed piece and understand more about this issue. The outdoors can do so much for us, it improves our well-being, safety and connectedness to nature. But not everyone gets to enjoy the outdoors. This is a post on why our environmentalism in advocating for going outdoors needs to consider other social issues. In my recent post about going outside and enjoying the outdoors, someone reminded me that not everyone has the same privilege of enjoying the outdoors. To some, this experience comes with anxiety, feeling unsafe and also fear which limits their access to green spaces. In a city with aims to physically increase every person’s access to parks, this comment made me realize that physical access needs to accompany psychological access too. Our green spaces are not accessible to all if we don’t address societal barriers that make physical access difficult. When we talk about solutions, we also need to ensure that if we don’t centre inclusion and accessibility in our solutions, they continue to reinforce existing inequalities. Which begs the question - who does our climate solutions serve? I put together some statistics, tagged groups and resources and hope that everyone can think to act in these ways in their own contexts. at the very least, read their content to learn. most of all, this underscores why #intersectionality is important. to recognize that our environmentalism is always connected to other social issues and is an amplifier. us as environmentalists cannot just see this issue with one lens only, but need to know that our goals need to align with causes that aim to eliminate discrimination and to push for respect and safety for all. You can google “environmental racism” or “gender and climate” for more insight on those intersections too - which i hope to cover more of. Environmentalists need to speak up about harassment, discrimination of all kinds and see it as part of our work. Thank you to the people who pointed this out to me and educated me on this. I hope this reflection allows others to share more or take away something. Please feel free to leave comments or share if I missed something out or also what you think about this! #climatejustice #intersectionalenvironmentalist

Race and racism has been a prevalent topic in Singapore news the last few months. There have been public displays of racism that have been caught on camera and this has highlighted ongoing challenges that Singaporeans of minoritized races are facing. 📰 I’m listing some resources to help get you engaged in this conversation! You’ll notice a lot of it is centered on reading- I find it’s a very powerful way to learn new things and understand new perspectives. When we read, we can take the time to fully understand something without needing to respond to it right away. 📰 Start with reading, but don’t end there. Make sure to have conversations with your friends, family, significant others, and yourself about this essential topic. 📰 #singapore #race #racism #privilege #lepakconversations #thebigread #discrimination #newperspectives #antiracist #bias #cape #readmore #diversity #inclusion #implicitbias
