This week so many are out running the Terry Fox run and paying tribute to an incredible Canadian! I thought I would share a close up to an amazing artwork we have in the gallery right now that also pays tribute to Terry Fox and his journey across Canada and celebrates more of our Canadian heritage.

“A Royal Dispatch” - Composition 0224 by Lesley Luce, explores Canada’s evolving identity through the imagery and symbolism of its postage stamps, with the title referencing both the royal purple palette, long associated with power and status, and the act of sending and receiving mail. The composition brings together imagery reflecting Canada’s transportation networks, public symbolism, and shared cultural memory, assembling a visual archive of how the country has represented itself across generations. References to historic railway infrastructure and Terry Fox, both figures that connected the country from coast to coast in very different ways, appear alongside archival postage stamps spanning from pre-Confederation to the present day. The work also incorporates the duelling 1950s Queen Elizabeth II stamp portraits by Yousuf Karsh and Dorothy Wilding, whose designs reflected early debates around image-making, monarchy, and national representation. From a distance, the work appears as a bold geometric pattern. Up close, its intricate details reveal layered symbols, historical references, and visual fragments that together reflect the evolving stories shaping Canadian identity.

"The Daily Route" transforms approximately 4,170 hand-placed paper fragments and vintage postage stamps into a layered portrait of Canadian identity. Sourced from the artist’s personal collection, the stamps span from the mid-19th century to the present day and include national symbols, historic figures, colonial emblems, contemporary Indigenous artwork, and images of striking unionized Canada Post employees.

Postage stamps reflect what a nation chooses to celebrate, preserve, and circulate, shaping how a country “looks good on paper,” both literally and figuratively. In The Daily Route, mass-produced stamps are removed from circulation and rearranged into an intimate visual archive that compels a viewer to lean in and look closely, discovering fragments of Canadian history side by side in harmony or, at times, in deliberate contrast.

From a distance, the work appears geometric and abstract. Up close, viewers encounter recognizable symbols, hidden details, and unexpected relationships that reward curiosity and invite reflection.

The work includes an accompanying reference book documenting the imagery, sources, references, and citations used throughout the composition." — Lesley Luce
