“We are defining an era‼️”

That was architect Cobus van den Berg’s assessment of the moment Utah finds itself in during a recent Park City panel with builder Brandon LeRoy and interior designer Leslie Schofield.

The conversation centered on collaboration—and the idea that the best homes happen when the architect, designer and builder work as one team.

“None of these homes could be created without ALL of us,” Leslie Schofield said.

For Brandon LeRoy, that collaboration is ultimately about creating something with soul. “Clients are looking for an experience. I firmly believe that homes have a soul. We should add to that soul, not take away from it.”

But the conversation went beyond houses. As Utah grows, the industry faces an opportunity—and responsibility—to pass its knowledge and craftsmanship to the next generation.

“There is a whole generation lost to never being able to create something with their hands,” Brandon said, pointing to programs at BYU and UVU that are giving students opportunities to build and create.

He summed up the responsibility simply: “Learn, Act, Share.” And perhaps most importantly: “May we not run so fast that we don’t take time to mentor.”

Perhaps that is the real challenge of defining an era: not simply creating what comes next, but making sure we take the time to teach others how to build it.

Culture isn’t something we inherit—it’s something we pass on.

LIFE LATELY . . .

July 23 I suffered a total tear of my hamstring off the pelvic bone while waterskiing. Ten days later, I went in for surgery to reattach the hamstring. It has been a challenging journey with countless lessons and also reminders of so many good things in my life. My entire life I have been a go-go get things done girl and this was like nothing I have experienced.

I have publicly acknowledged that the day before the accident, I said under my breath that I was not sure I could maintain the crazy pace that my life was moving at. Well 12 hours later, I was literally stopped with a shocking force and blow to both my body and mind. I hope by sharing some of this journey it serves as a reminder that when life gets too fast and crazy to take a breath and SLOW DOWN before the universe finds a dramatic way to ensure you listen.

My public list of gratitude and gentle reminders:

•Take time to listen and honor your body, mind, and spirit.
•Jon is an incredible care giver. He literally had to be by my side for the simplest of tasks in my life. He has been patient and giving beyond words.
•My children are incredibly loving, patient and helpful.
•I have the most AMAZING friends! They brought food, flowers, and books, but most of all they came and sat and talked for hours on end with me. They called from all over the world, they spent their free time with me and they showered me in love.
•My LS Studio work team and my design community are so incredibly supportive. My team was patient, diligent and thoughtful. I was out of the office for over a month and they never complained. They did anything they could to help lighten my burden.
•Each day I had to choose to find the silver linings. There were little wins each day and I had to look for them and recognize them.
•I had to allow the sadness to move through me and not hold it in. I cried a lot without any judgement and then I could move on after releasing the pain and discouragement.
•This is something I can heal from. It is temporary.
•Perspective is everything. Seeing the world from a wheelchair, on crutches or just moving at such a slow pace has changed so many things within me.
