The Lesnes Resistance are in opposition to the demolition of the Lesnes Estate by Peabody. Refurbish Don't Demolish.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
🏘️✊ We’re supporting an estate resident in challenging controversial demolition plans at Lesnes Estate - one of around 137 London estates at risk of demolition. ⚖️🌍 When communities are displaced and environmental harm is irreversible, it’s a matter of urgent public concern.

Activists occupying houses on the Lesnes Estate have been issued letters (48 of them!) demanding our immediate departure from the buildings occupied in response to the abject neglect Peabody has inflicted on the residents of the estate. We will not leave !! To abandon what we have achieved so far, the profound collaboration established with this diverse, vibrant multi-ethnic working-class community, cannot be abandoned in response to Peabody’s threats. Rather than have a conversation with those whose lives he has an enormous impact on to explain his position and listen to resident’s concerns, John Lewis prefers his distance in an alienated office where the urbanisation of capital is ruthlessly pursued with a gilded façade of social benevolence. Attempting to enforce authority over freehold properties they own, gained through the debasement of working class social reproduction by the financialisation of the fundamental right to housing, this effort is simultaneous to aspirations of dispossessing working-class freehold homeowners and all that call the Lesnes Estate home. Eviction, dispossession, destruction and despair is Peabody’s influence on the Lesnes Estate. More updates soon.

With support from @architectscan, AAB Architects are engaging with the local community at the Lesnes Estate to produce a series of practical retrofit proposals and show that there are real alternatives to Peabody's destructive plans for demolition and displacement. A key next step is to obtain Retrofit Assessments for a range of different house typologies on the estate. These assessments will show the main ways that energy is lost in each building, pointing to different design approaches to retrofitting. The retrofit assessor who is working with LesRes and AAB has offered a heavily discounted community rate, assessing 6 homes for £828. Please help us raise the money and make the case for saving not just this estate but the Thamesmead Estate at large, valuing its communities and its architectural heritage. The Lesnes Estate is a small portion of the immensely ambitious 1960s plans of the Greater London Council for its utopian new town of Thamesmead, which was to include facilities for a modern, communal way of life, even including a yacht basin adjacent to the Thames. Eventually, the much-needed access roads and railway lines that were meant to connect this new part of the city to the centre failed to be built, and the project was branded a 'failure'. Nowadays, however, these much-awaited transport connections have finally reached the local population, with the Elizabeth Line taking only 16 minutes to Canary Wharf -- a much-advertised fact on the demolition hoardings. But instead of being allowed to enjoy the improved connections to their area, the local community, now majority West African, is being torn apart and displaced. By contributing to this fundraiser, you will be helping the Homeowners and LesRes, first of all, fund the retrofit assessments. Any additional funds are warmly welcome, to cover GoFundMe fees and help support the campaign. Find out more and make a donation, however small, at bit.ly/LesnesRetrofit. You can also help us by just spreading the word :) 🙏🏘️

🚨🚨 Lesnes Occupation News 🚨🚨 We have occupied another house ! Witnessing a contractor from KBH Building Services, employed by Peabody, throw and destroy furniture from the first story window of a house in a senseless act of destruction, we decided to intervene. Around the estate, more than a third of homes are empty, voids that once hosted life, and in countless of their gardens lie piles of rubbish which, until now, we assumed to have been left by opportunistic fly-tippers. In actuality, it is contractors under the command of PEABODY who are wrecking the estate, with furniture that could be used by the community thrown out of windows and left to rot and decay in hazardous piles of rubbish within a neighbourhood cherished by its people and where children come out daily to play. In defiance, the Lesnes Occupation have occupied the house, to save the remaining furniture, and have salvaged what we could from Peabody's careless contractors. More furniture and resources to be used by the community in our communal spaces, and items representing the abundance of life that once thrived on the estate. Where Peabody destroys, the Lesnes Resistance builds, and where Peabody neglects, the Lesnes Resistance cares and celebrates.

Campaign update! On 4th July, @nlalondon and @peabodyldn attempted their own tour of Thamesmead, of course omitting the managed decline a five minute walk from the new environmentally and socially hostile amalgamation Peabody are responsible for. A blinkered tour, the Lesnes Resistance made sure more context was given to this celebration of gentrification and social cleansing. After ignoring residents for a decade, and the protest occupation for three months, the big cheeses of Peabody’s social violence preferred to retreat and end the tour after three minutes rather than speak to the residents they are displacing! More updates soon ! All the best, Lesnes Resistance

ACAN! Funding Pots Award announcement: Retrofitting estates. We are delighted to announce the first recipients of funding since the launch of our Funding Pots strategy in April. Following their successful application, Alice Brown and AAB architects have been awarded an ACAN! grant to help create a resident-led retrofit strategy for the Lesnes Estate in Thamesmead, London. Designed by the GLC and built in the late 1960s, the estate now faces demolition by current owner, housing association Peabody. Residents on the estate are campaigning to retain ownership of their houses, half of which are freehold. The ACAN! grant will enable @aabarchitecture to continue their work with residents of Lesnes Estate to envision a retrofit strategy for their homes. Introducing the concept of retrofit to residents, the project will explore how retrofit can provide the framework for an alternative model for estate regeneration, providing social and environmental benefits and resilience in the face of climate change. Working with a retrofit assessor, the team will talk to residents about their homes, explain the benefits of retrofit and look at how their homes can be improved by a phased retrofit plan. The research will be consolidated in a toolkit that aims to enable residents to consider retrofit as part of the solution for their homes. Look out for further award announcements and details of future Funding Pots windows. #ACAN #ArchitectsCAN #retrofit #LesNes #Thamesmead #homes #community #climateaction #communityaction #funding #ArchitectsClimateActionNetwork #London ACAN! More events coming up! On the 22nd of June, join us for a Jollof Rice cooking lesson by Esther, and a talk by Paul Dobraszczyk on his book Anarchist Architecture! Jollof Rice has been an important fuel for the engine of the campaign, shared between residents and campaigners, with the community bringing the incredible food of West Africa to the Lesnes Estate! Please DM us if you would like to take part - there are 10 spaces - first come first served ! After enjoying this meal, Paul Dobraszczyk will be talking about his book Anarchist Architecture - Everyday anarchism, self-building, the right to the city, occupation, participatory architecture and eco-villages will be covered, providing inspiration for the future of the occupation and where our campaign stands in a long legacy of protest in the built environment. We’d love to see you there !
