Some children do not get to just be children. They become the caretaker, the peacekeeper, the one everyone leans on. When you grow up in survival mode, you learn to read the room, manage emotions, and take care of everyone else before you even understand your own needs. You become responsible too early. You stay strong. You hold everything together. And over time, that role can become part of your identity. But being the caretaker often comes with a cost. It can make it hard to ask for help, difficult to set boundaries, and unfamiliar to prioritize your own healing. You may feel guilty resting. You may feel responsible for everyone’s emotions. You may not even know what support looks like for you. In this clip, Rose shares how childhood trauma shaped her into the caretaker in her family and how those early roles can follow us into adulthood. This conversation speaks to anyone who grew up feeling like they had to be strong for everyone else. Emotional regulation has become a buzzword, but most people were never actually taught what it means. It is not about being calm all the time. It is not about suppressing emotions. And it is definitely not about just controlling yourself. Emotional regulation is the ability to stay connected to yourself while experiencing big emotions. It is noticing what you are feeling, understanding why it is happening, and responding instead of reacting. It is being able to move through anxiety, anger, sadness, or overwhelm without shutting down or exploding. When trauma is present, emotional regulation gets harder because your nervous system is wired for survival. You may go into fight, flight, freeze, or shutdown before you even realize what you are feeling. That is not a lack of effort. It is protection. In this clip from A Sista Love Podcast, we break down what emotional regulation actually is, why it has become such a popular term, and why it can feel so difficult when you are healing from trauma. Medical trauma doesn’t just impact your health, it changes your relationship with your body and your sense of safety. After repeated procedures, chronic illness, pain, or not being believed, your nervous system can begin to associate your body with danger. You may become hyper-aware of sensations, anxious about symptoms, emotionally reactive, or completely disconnected. Some people live in constant vigilance. Others shut down. Both are trauma responses. Healing from medical trauma isn’t just physical, it’s about rebuilding trust with your body. Learning that sensations aren’t always threats. Creating safety from the inside out. This is why emotional regulation can feel so hard during healing, your nervous system is still trying to protect you. In this clip from A Sista Love Podcast, we talk about how trauma reshapes your connection with your body, why healing can feel overwhelming, and how to gently begin restoring safety again.
