A letter's outline. Its properties and qualities — that’s not a constant at all in our perception!

Read my article in the latest issue of Forum, the journal of Letter Exchange @letter_exchange
I'd love discussing it as well.

Limits of Perfection.
Smooth or rough, mechanical or live, changing through the stream of time and with changing tools.

Thanks to Typejournal and Schrift Publishers @typejournal.ru for the permission to publish the translation of my article.
New images were added to illustrate my thoughts about rough outline and smooth (Villu Toots and Olga Kovalenko @letterka ).
Also thanks to Barry Thomas and the editor John Neilson for adding great comments to the article, they're included in the publication as well — I value the dialogue so much!

— Where do you read Forum journal?

— I like reading mine in my studio, in my workspace, taking a break from designing my own letters to catch up with what my @letter_exchange Letter Exchange colleagues have been reflecting on; to note which exhibitions and talks are coming up, which events have stood out over the past six months, and who the new LX full members are.
Not only reading Forum but contributing to it is a joy! — for Forum 52, coming out in September and currently being compiled, edited, and designed by John Neilson, I've written a couple of reviews—one of a talk and another of an online symposium I attended this spring and summer. I've also sent in some news about upcoming events. And I’ve been putting the finishing touches to an article (just a few little details left!).
When Forum 52 lands on my doorstep in September, I promise to take another photo. 😊 Can’t wait!

My AEPM @aepm_printingmuseums conference review is now published in Forum magazine by Letter Exchange (Issue 51, March 2026) @letter_exchange
In my review, I focus on the typographic dimensions of printmaking, the future of hot metal typesetting, and the renewed artistic and typographic interest in working with movable type, proving that living practice remains one of the most effective ways to preserve and transmit historical knowledge and keep typographic traditions vibrant for future generations.

Forum is a wonderful magazine for anyone interested in type design and typography, and I was delighted to hold a printed copy (with a very nice paper!). Taking time to read a printed issue is a very important focus practice to me, and a reminder why in the age of ai generated content it still matters to keep your hard-to-explain interest in everything having to do with letters. For the sake of pure curiosity which is one true and meaningful source of joy in life to me.

If you're in need of something to occupy you indoors on these cold and miserable February days, then you can always check out the Letter Exchange archive.

It features a number of lectures recorded over the years covering lettering, calligraphy and in the case of one we've just spotted 'The Lettering of William Morris'. You can find the full list of recordings and prices, etc at : https://letterexchange.org/archive#LX-Archive-Dan-Forster

I did it! Thank you so much everyone who came to hear me talk about my work for @letter_exchange at @artworkersguild or who kindly tuned in to the livestream. Looks like I pull lots of faces and wave my hands about a lot when I speak 😅 Thank you for so much for inviting me, listening so kindly and then clapping at the end… had some lovely conversations afterwards too. After all the planning and gathering of slides and practising in the end it all zoomed by so very quickly …felt a bit like doing the luge 🥇 #letterpress #futurepositive #sciart #useyourhands #artworkersguild

There's a lot being made of AI at the moment in the media, but we prefer Analogue Intelligence. This is the title of the next lecture from Letter Exchange as they welcome Elizabeth Fraser on 11 Feb. She's an artist printmaker working at the intersection of language, science and making by hand.

Elizabeth will share how analogue processes like letterpress and linocut unlock free-thinking, curiosity and unexpected connections. From intricate science-inspired artist books to bold, colourful prints rooted in words she loves, this talk celebrates thinking through making.
Tickets can be found via Letter Exchange's website: https://letterexchange.org/events
