Deep breath. It happened.
Personal best striper.
The goal this year was simple: new water.
For three months, I’ve been on a mission. Mapping a new fishery, hoping and praying it would yield a fish to break the record. Trip after trip, I couldn’t pull a thing together. Just pure failure. tackle failures, technique failures, mental failures, and physical failures. Cast after empty cast. Long, quiet drives home in the dark.
Something had to give. I needed a breath.

in the pre dawn

glide… glide… glide… glide.
Then weight. heavy, dead weight. another snag?
then the snag began to move. slowly at first, then surging fast toward the logjam at the tail of the pool. straddling a paddleboard, there wasn’t much to be done, the harder I pulled, the faster I surfed toward a twisted hell of timber. we reached it together: the queen of the river and a schmuck hanging onto a rod.
she wrapped herself deep, almost certainly gone, bound to break me off in the branches or shake the bait on the slack. five minutes went by in total chaos. I couldn’t even tell if she was still on, or if I was just trying to salvage a prized glide bait from the mess. hand over hand, I pulled the line up through the tangled wood.
then a mouth surfaced from under the board, a mass of branches, striped bass, and painted resin. I reached down and took hold of that gaping maw. face to face. I won!
A miracle fish.
46 inches. Bottomed out (and broke) my 40 pound scale.
I spent fifteen solid minutes reviving her, making sure she’d swim off strong to make another angler’s dream come true. Than I sat, I smoked, I drank my grainy coffee. And I thanked God for the work of his hand.
Thank you, Matt, for the beautiful bait. Thank you, Mike, for the rod that held it together.
The stoke was real, not the kind where you jump around and hoot, but the kind where you have no choice but to sit back, quiet, and just breathe in the moment.
