Who the f*ck is Brenda? 👀📖⚠️

Well, if you’re a member of Amazon First Reads, you can find out now.

Warm Bodies by John Marrs - his first ever short story - is currently in the Top Ten charts on Amazon on both sides of the Atlantic.

Warm Bodies is currently available on Amazon First Reads / Amazon Prime Reading, which means if you’re in the UK, US, CA or Australia, and you’re an Amazon Prime member you can download the Kindle edition for free. But if you’re not a Prime member, it doesn’t matter as the eBook is also available for just 99p in the UK or $1.99 in the US, Canada, and Australia.

While Warm Bodies is available now through Amazon First Reads, its official release date is 1 November, when it will also become available through Kindle Unlimited, Audible, and additional Amazon marketplaces.

📚 REVIEW 📚

In my second assignment as a @tandemcollectiveuk Thrills and Chills Sleuth, I was handed the fifth case for Scouse Detective Sheridan Holler. Had I read the previous four? Fess up time, I've read Book One. It's fine – @tmpayneauthor knows this and she's fine with it 🫣

So let's start where all good books start, the prologue. And I have to say it's one of the best prologues I've read recently as a call comes through to the emergency services regarding a house fire. But it's whose house that's burning that really sets the pace for this book. After that, the heat is most definitely on.

The main story picks up 37 years later, with the perpetrator of the fire murdered and all fingers pointing to one family – a family that deserves revenge.

Then in a parallel story one of Sheridan's colleagues is brutally attacked and pretty much left for dead. Pretty much. Holler has her suspicions about who carried out the attack and puts professional judgement aside for personal feelings.

It's a story that moves at a cracking pace, with short chapters and humour that I really enjoyed (I think Tina and I are on the same page jocularly – which scares me a little).

My only wish is I'd read books 2 through 4 before diving into this. (That's a ME problem.)

While ‘One Bad Deed’ can definitely be read as a standalone thriller, I felt a wee bit less emotionally connected to Sheridan and her crew than I probably should have been. These characters have obviously been through a lot but I've not been with them through that whole journey.

Nevertheless, I still felt quite the jolt when a certain plot point dropped. Even I couldn't believe my eyes.

In conclusion, ‘One Bad Deed’ is recommended and works well at bringing the in-tandem cases together. Obviously I didn't work anything out (as per usual) and also, I've found a new, very unlikeable character in Steve. Tina, you write a very bad man extremely well.

‘One Bad Deed’ is out to buy now and also available on Kindle Unlimited for those that do.

Theakston Old Peculiar Crime Writing Festival ✨

I had the absolute pleasure of working at Harrogate with @tandemcollectiveuk @amazonpublishing & @johnmarrs.author last weekend and I couldn’t have asked for a more wonderful time! Another huge “pinch me” moment in my freelancing career with Tandem. Thank you to everybody who visited us on the stall, screamed at me for a Chapter 39 mug, chatted with me about books and played our games until all the prizes run out!!! 🥹

Thank you to @milleni_el @lifewithcharmc & @lexbrookman for sharing the stand with me - we were busy all day every day and I had so many amazing conversations with readers both new to John and long time fans! 🙌

Caught up with my darling @lucyvineauthor @ellyvineauthor in the tent!! I also got to meet @janeharperauthor which was incredible but I’ll leave that story time for another post…

Harrogate, I’ll hopefully see you next year!

Love Bec x

📚 JUNE WRAP-UP 📚

Another June is over so here, as is customary, is my wrap up.

Eight books this month, plus some judging for Glencairn Glass Short Story Competition (winning story and runner up now available on their website). And a wee bit of reading for @bloodyscotland too 😬

I’ve not had time to review all of these books on my grid and now that I’m in full swing of Daggering™ for the @crimewritersassoc who knows if I actually will.

But thank you to the authors who kept me entertained this month…

@andrewraymond.books
@radiomukhers
@sarajcullen
@kirsty_lockwood_author
@sathnamsanghera
@mayrinaldi56
@lynnejmcewanwriter
@shaboland

… you all do an incredible job and I don’t envy you in the least. We only have to read the books, not toil over what they contain.

And so onto July.

In three weeks time it’s one of the highlights of The First Eleven Minutes calendar – Theakstons Crime at @harrogatefestivals – looking forward to catching up with my bookish friends at the end of the month (not you Emily)*.

To those who follow me and regularly comment, like and share – thank you as always for keeping me company in my reading journey. If you’re new here then welcome aboard.

And thank you to the continuously lovely book gods (ie publishers) who more often than not (sometimes) answer my prayers.

Also a big thank you to @tandemcollectiveuk for having me along as one of their sleuths in the Thrills and Chills Book Club.

Lots of exciting things coming up so until we meet again… Stay Bookish, my friends.

* 😉

P.S. yes, I’m still in my Wham! Era.

🎲A Deadly Game The Ultimate Price..
Deception by @jackjordan_author
.
OUT NOW and this is one book you do not want to miss!
A thriller that cuts that deep it might make you weep.
.
I was lucky enough to get my hands on an advanced copy of this book last year and it still plays on my mind to this day!
.
A story of parents with are willing to do anything to save their childs life, however they didn't realise how far this game would go. They aren't bad people, they're desperate.
This story pushes the boundaries of moral dilemma and crosses into the point of no return. Heinous crimes you couldn't imagine, but in context, you begin to wonder where the line is that you'd cross.
