The London Gay Symphony orchestra was founded in 1996 and is one of only a few LGBT+ orchestras in the world. We welcome all players of all abilities.

London Gay Symphony Orchestra marked its 30th anniversary at Cadogan Hall with a programme that looked back at where the orchestra began and towards what comes next.

Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio Italien and Liszt’s Les Préludes opened the evening, followed by the world premiere of Mark Bowden’s Restless Host. The second half was devoted to Rachmaninov’s Symphony No. 3.

Under new Musical Director Sonia Ben-Santamaria, the near ninety-strong orchestra brought warmth, scale and character to the programme, with leader Corey Wickens also standing out.

But the anniversary was about more than the music. LGSO’s history is closely tied to queer community, friendship and support, from its early concerts and HIV/AIDS fundraising to the role it continues to play today.

Two of London’s long-running LGBT+ music ensembles are marking major anniversaries this October.

The London Gay Symphony Orchestra (LGSO) celebrates 30 years with a concert at Cadogan Hall on 18 October, while the London Gay Symphonic Winds (LGSW) marks 20 years at St John’s Waterloo on 24 October.

LGSO’s programme includes Tchaikovsky, Liszt, Rachmaninov and the world premiere of Mark Bowden’s Restless Host. LGSW will mix classical and wind band music with musical theatre, film music and pop, with former members returning for the encore.

London’s leading LGBT+ music ensembles celebrate landmark anniversaries with two October concerts

Sister organisations the London Gay Symphony Orchestra (LGSO) and the London Gay Symphonic Winds (LGSW), will celebrate 30 and 20 respective years of LGBT+ music-making, with two anniversary concerts one week apart in October.

LGSO’s anniversary concert will include pieces by Tchaikovsky and Liszt, which were performed during the orchestra’s first season in 1996, followed by the world premiere of Restless Host by Mark Bowden and Rachmaninov’s Symphony No. 3. The performance will take place at Cadogan Hall under the baton of their newly appointed Musical Director, Sonia Ben-Santamaria.

LGSW’s programme will combine classical arrangements and beloved wind band repertoire with musical theatre, film music, and camp pop favourites, culminating in an encore featuring returning former members of the band. The concert will be led by their Musical Director John Brown at St John’s Waterloo, with @reece_connolly_ (The Gallifrey Cabaret) compering.

@lgsorch co-chairs Gary Clarke @theworldofglo, Josh Sturges, and @lgswinds chair Ricky Holtz @ayyrickay said in a joint statement:

“We are beyond excited and honoured to be celebrating our groups’ shared history of queer and inclusive music-making through these two concerts. These concerts celebrate our ensembles’ diverse yet shared history, with the LGSW being founded by members of the LGSO twenty years ago, as well as the generations of LGBT+ musicians, conductors, audiences, and supporters who have made them possible. We warmly look forward to welcoming audiences, both old and new, to join us in our anniversary celebrations.”

The October anniversary concerts will soon be followed by a separate performance from the @londongaybigband in December, who are also celebrating their own 15-year anniversary.

Together, the concerts showcase the range of LGBT+ music-making in London: from symphonic repertoire and new music to musical theatre, film scores, big band and pop. Audiences can attend one or both concerts and join these long-established ensembles in celebrating their anniversary year.

We created this track in collaboration with a couple of wonderful musicians from the London Gay Symphony Orchestra. We recorded the vocals and instrumental parts while on musical retreat on the beautiful Scottish Island of Islay and we can’t wait to show you the video!

Lark Ascending…

A shortened for Instagram (but still wayyy too long for the format) video of one of the musical highlights of my year so far with the wonderful @lgsorch

It was a true privilege to play alongside so many beautiful and supportive friends. I couldn’t have asked for a more lovely group of people cheering me on both in the orchestra and the audience. Took a bit of a leap saying yes to this concert, having not performed solo with an orchestra for about 15 years!

Learning a new solo alongside my regular gigs was definitely a challenge but one that was hugely rewarding. Not only was it so good for my playing and practice but also so fulfilling to achieve something like this when I could easily have said no.

My aim was to capture the mood of the piece in the time it was written. The storytelling is so immense, which is why it’s become such a popular classic I think.

If you’ve the patience to stay until the end, please enjoy the audience not knowing when to clap!

What a joy, hope these snippets show various light and shade ❤️ thanks for every message of support before the concert, means a lot to know other believe in you when you’re feeling the nerves!
