Through the voices of four remarkable women, we explored the complexities of father-daughter relationships, the memories we carry, and the stories that shape who we become.

There’s something special about hearing an artist speak about the work in their own words.

For Notes From Daughters, we sat down with these incredible women to learn more about the relationships that shaped the pieces they created.

Their work invites us to look a little closer at our own relationships. The things we carry, the things we leave unsaid, and the ways love can show up differently in every family.

We’re so grateful to these women for sharing something so personal with us, and for creating work that gives all of us a reason to reflect. 🤍

Some things are easier to write than to say.

We asked women to write a note to their fathers or what that would look like. Words of love, gratitude, longing, reflection, and everything that may have been left unsaid.

Each note becomes part of Notes From Daughters, an exhibition shaped by the complicated, tender connection between daughters and their fathers and how it impacts our lives.

What would your note say?

Notes from Daughters is a multidisciplinary exhibition & cultural platform bringing together nineteen national & international women artists working across painting, sculpture, photography, textile, film, multimedia, & music. Through deeply personal & culturally diverse works, the exhibition explores the father–daughter relationship as one of the earliest sites where many encounter love, empowerment, abandonment, authority, violence, expectation, protection – all through the male gaze.
At the same time, the project expands beyond the family to examine how female identity is shaped by broader cultural, social, religious, & political structures. The works consider how ideas about womanhood, beauty, sexuality, obedience, freedom, & belonging are inherited, challenged, & reimagined across generations.

Through art, performance, film, & public dialogue, Notes from Daughters opens a conversation about gender, memory, power, & the enduring forces that shape women’s lives. At its heart, the exhibition asks: What does it mean to be a woman, & who gets to define her?

In this Young feature, Shuhan Zhang writes about Unfolding Roots, curated by Xinying Wang in New York. Moving through questions of memory, embodiment, femininity, queerness, and spirituality, Zhang considers how the practices of Orange Li and Sarah Davidson complicate fixed ideas of identity and origin. Through dreams, bodily experience, intuition, queer ecology, and the natural world, How Roots Grow approaches roots as fluid and relational—shaped through migration, encounter, transformation, and connection. The essay asks how identity continues to grow through the visible and invisible relationships that bind us to our bodies, other people, nature, and the past.

ARTIST HIGHLIGHT — Orange Li

Orange Li’s work begins somewhere between memory and dreams—where the body, the mind, and the natural world quietly begin to speak to one another.

Drawing from personal memories, dreams, and an intuitive understanding of the body’s connection to our psychological states, Orange builds a visual language that moves between nature, time and space, herstory, and spirituality. Storytelling becomes a way of bringing these worlds together, allowing what is internal, hidden, or difficult to name to take form.

At the heart of her practice is an interest in what often goes unseen. Through herstory, Orange looks closely at societal norms and gives space to voices and experiences that have been hidden or oppressed. Yet her work never loses its sense of wonder. Alongside these questions runs a persistent thread of hope—one rooted in the mystery, beauty, and possibility she finds in nature.

Her practice searches for connections between the human and natural worlds, bringing different forms of knowledge, experience, and imagination into a visual universe of her own.

This August, come find us, wander into Orange’s world, and stay curious—some things only reveal themselves when we look a little closer.

Whewww, what a week! Upstate Artist Camp 2026 was so much fun! Full of adventure + exploration, hours of focused art making energy, bellies full of fish and laughter, and lots of great memories! (And for me specifically: spray foam. Lots of spray foam.)

We weaved, drew, printed, carved, sketched, foraged, made medicine, did construction converting a shed into a darkroom, created time-lapses on film and prints on brownie cameras, did a film swap, spent hours communing with plants and learning so much from our resident herbalist @pageofthepriestess. We swam, hiked, fished, sunbathed, paddle boarded in the marsh, counted shooting stars (and satellites) cooked together, had nightly bonfires, and by the end we all felt refreshed and rejuvenated.

Too many highlights to count. Thank you @lydiajg @li.orange @donny.bianchi and @margeauxart for making this an incredible and memorable week! We miss you all already!

Notes from Daughters brings together 19 national & international women artists working across painting, sculpture, photography, multimedia, textile, film, poetry, and music to explore one of the most formative relationships in a woman’s life: the relationship between fathers and daughters.

In recent years, conversations about gender, power, & identity have taken on renewed urgency. Yet the intimate family relationships that often shape these experiences remain less visible in public discourse.

@notesfromdaughters addresses this gap by exploring the formative role of father–daughter relationships in shaping how women understand themselves & their place in the world.

The project invites audiences to consider how these early relationships influence confidence, autonomy, emotional development, & the narratives women carry into adulthood.

Delighted to announce the upcoming project, “Speaking in Shadows: An Invocation of Migrant Presence,” opening this August through September at Think!Chinatown in NYC. Here are some images from installation last week - artmaking does not surrender to heatwaves!
“Speaking in Shadows” will create a resplendent garden of cut paper and archetypal depictions of people whose absence is articulated, creating a space where the poetry of migrant lives is named, beheld, and voiced in light and shadow.
It is a collaborative artwork with the brilliant Nyssa Chow and Daniel Arturo Almeida, both of whom I’ve had the privilege of working with over many years, and it will continually evolve through participatory community workshops. We’re honored to present this at @ThinkChinatown, an intergenerational non-profit focused on the intersection of storytelling, arts & neighborhood engagement.
