50 years of industrial design in Queensland.

On Wednesday evening, designers, educators, students and industry leaders filled St John’s Cathedral in Brisbane to celebrate five decades since industrial design education began at QIT (now QUT) in the mid-1970s.

Our panel moved through three eras:

The past: Robert Geddes FDIA and Gordon Stuart FDIA on drawing boards, foam models and convincing manufacturers that design mattered.

The present: Jonathan Tighe (Intellidesign) and Sara Pontoppidan (Clandestine Design Group) on designers as strategic partners and translators between technology and people.

The future: Rebekah Davis (Griffith University) and Shayne Beaver (QUT) on AI, regulation, sustainability and why first principles matter more than ever.

As DIA CEO @simoneleamon put it: “The stronger our collective voice, the harder it is to ignore.”

Wrapping up an incredible awards week celebrating the amazing achievement for QUT Industrial Design graduate Tadhg Cullinane!

Incredibly proud to celebrate Tadhg, who has taken home two major honours at the 2026 @design_institute_au Graduate of the Year Awards (GOTYA):

- Queensland Graduate of the Year
- Queensland Graduate of the Year — USE Category (Higher Education)

To be recognised as the winner of the USE category and also as the overall Queensland Graduate of the Year across design is an extraordinary achievement and a fantastic recognition of Tadhg’s talent, capability and hard work. Tadhg also progressed to the national awards, where he was considered alongside the very best emerging design talent from across Australia.

The DIA’s GOTYA program is its flagship initiative for emerging designers, bringing together Australia’s most outstanding design graduates. Being recognised at this level is therefore a significant milestone as Tadhg begins his professional design career.

We’re also incredibly proud of Ella Hore @ellahore.design who was nominated as a Graduate of the Year in recognition of her outstanding work throughout her Industrial Design degree. Being selected to represent QUT at this level is a fantastic achievement in itself and a wonderful acknowledgement of the quality, dedication and creativity Ella demonstrated throughout her studies.

A huge congratulations to Tadhg, Ella and all the other nominees and award winners! It’s fantastic to see the work of our QUT Industrial Design graduates recognised at this level.

More awards and recognition for our superb ID students!

Congratulation to our Industrial Design graduates who shone brightly at the Design Institute of Australia @design_institute_au Graduate of the Year Awards (GOTYA) for 2025! These awards recognise the very best emerging design talent across the nation, and our QUT ID graduates have truly made their mark once again!

A huge congrats to Kilian Frunz who took out both QLD GOTYA for the USE Category, as well as the QLD overall Graduate Of The Year - a deserving winner of this incredible accolade! Kilian was unable to attend as he has already started the next step of his journey in Masters of Strategic Design at TUDelft.

Congratulations also to Lisa Te who was Highly Commended in the USE Category, incredibly proud of her impactful project and continued dedication.

Superb work by Teddy Meredith as well for being nominated as a finalist.

We couldn’t be prouder of the talent and passion our graduates bring to the world of design. And we know there will be many more accolades to these group of students, and to various others this year! 🎉💯👌🏼

The Ship Inn at South Brisbane once again accommodated the DIA meetup late last month.

The cold weather and school break kept some at home this time, but the tight-knit turnout felt cozy under the mid-winter moon.

Drinks, food, pints and schooners were shared at this iconic venue on this cold Thursday evening.

🌏 In celebration of World Industrial Design Day 2025, the Design Institute of Australia (DIA) is proud to contribute to the global dialogue on ethics in design, hosted by @worlddesignorg.

Our response — “Design with Integrity: Ethical Futures for Australian Design” — is curated by DIA NSW Chair @nila.rezaei , and brings together diverse voices from across the country to share insights, case studies, and personal reflections grounded in the DIA’s Code of Ethics — a framework all members commit to upholding.

QUT Design Club Networking Night || 2025/05/22

On Thursday night, the QDC (@qutdesignclub) ran a networking night for design students and professionals to meet and mingle.

The night was focused on a Q&A discussion panel featuring speakers from various disciplines, including digital design, design science, fashion, industrial design, graphic design, mixed media, and more.

Each speaker had the opportunity to share their journey, who they are and what they do before moving on to the prepared Q&A questions. Soon after, the floor was opened up to the audience, and we heard strong answers to students' burning questions.

Once the panel was wrapped, everyone returned to the hall to continue the conversation over some generously provided food and snacks.

Overall, it was a solid event with a great turnout. Well done to everyone involved!
