On the morning of our Vancouver Emmett Sparling Workshop shoot day we went to Stanley Park to seek out basic compositions—the 5 core techniques being Rule of 1/3’s, Leading Lines, Framing, Center-weighted/symmetry, and Layering.

It’s challenging to find spots with 20 photographers roaming inside the same space, but we wandered and everyone saw what they saw. I’m excited to eventually see all the different perspectives shot from so many different lenses. I strictly had a 24-70mm lens on hand for simplicity, and these are a few compositions or scenes that I saw. For whatever reason I decided on a very high contrast silhouette-style edit for these, and yes I know I heavy-handedly completely buried the shadows into complete black darkness. I don’t care, sue me. And almost none of these are cropped at 4/3 vertical against all algorithmic advice. I just prefer horizontal images.

The captions on each image shares notes and the composition technique witnessed. This first shot emphasizes symmetry and ignores other things such as thirds, leading lines and layers because the foreground has 40 people in it and this was the only framing possible that created the isolated, contemplative emotional feeling of this woman witnessing a sunset. Emmett said something in the classroom, "Art doesn’t answer questions, it evokes them.”

Center-weighted, balance, symmetry, layers. This image evokes a sense of youthful freedom, as well as the question, “Where is this boys mother?” Haha.

Another contemplative moment. Core technique is finding a frame within a frame with the couple positioned between the two trees to draw your eye toward them. There are layers from foreground to background, not much middle. There are no leading lines from foreground to subject, but there is a leading line from middleground to background with the outcropping leading your eye to the horizon line. Also rule of thirds applies with the subject(s) positioned in the right 1/3.

Lately, I’ve been wanting to be more intentional with sharpening my technical skills in photography. It’s one thing to understand composition and “have a good eye.” It’s an entirely different thing to manually operate a professional camera with competence.

With that mind, this past Labor Day weekend I dipped my toes into the deep-end by participating in a 3-day camera workshop in Vancouver, Canada with the IYKYK legendary wunderkind travel and documentary photographer Emmett Sparling. It began with a short day in the studio discussing process and was followed by a long shoot day in Stanley Park and Bowen Island where Emmett grew up and his extended family still live.

In fact, the whole team running the workshop were either close friends or direct family members including Mother Tiffanee and Grandpa Tim. His lovely girlfriend Sam Nyland pictured here was our talent/model. Together, Emmett and his team made the 20 visiting photographers from around the globe feel very relaxed and at home, as if we were all part of the family as well.

Day-3 was an instructor-led demonstration of post-processing and how to keep your images real, yet make them sing. This image gallery contains my homework, a few selects that provide a small taste of the experience. There’s so much more but I chose for this post mostly environmental portraits as this is what I was most interested in honing—shooting people on your own outdoors in changing natural light conditions. These images were shot on a Sony Alpha a7rIII with a 24-70mm lens and processed in Lightroom, no Photoshop.

I want to thank Emmett, Sam, Carleigh, Keoni, Tiffanee, Tim and the entire motley crew of creative misfit shutterbugs who made this such a fun and educational weekend. Who said dog walking can’t be cinematic?!

Inspired by the resurgence of film & watching movies in an IMAX theatre (thank you The Odyssey & Christopher Nolan), these shots just had to be shared! Sometimes the bigger picture really is better, and seeing the shot in its full form allows you to see it the way it was meant to be experienced.
