Before the start line, two days of preparation.

Riders arrive at Base Camp two days before the race begins, with time dedicated to preparation, training and four essential briefings.

Our Head Medic @shazza_nott goes through medical procedures and safety. @libbyprins, Head of Communications, covers Garmin tracking and communication. Our Head Vet @dr_cozy covers horse welfare and veterinary protocol. And @jakotango briefs riders on Patagonia, the trail and the terrain ahead.

A time to ask questions, share important reminders and prepare for the 400 km ahead.

Out there, there is no phone signal. Garmin becomes the lifeline.

The @thebighoof journey came to a close yesterday as humans, horses and dogs wound their way through the fells, valleys and towns of the Lake District National Park for the last 8 days.

Yesterday the horses made their way through the cobbled streets of Kendal to arrive at their destination a @growingwellcumbria

Over 8 days and over £3000 raised for the Cumbrian mental health charity @growingwellcumbria if you’re able to you can still donate. There’s a link in my bio.

HEAD VETERINARIAN of THE PASS OF TEARS PART 1:

Trying to condense 3 weeks into 3 minutes is a challenge, and it doesn’t help that you can only use 90 seconds of a song (thanks insta).

Seven years ago I was invited to ride along and map out part of Patagonia for a horse race, then a global pandemic locked the world down. Then a quick beer in Buenos Aires 18 months ago reignited the spark to help organise and vet the inaugural “Pass of Tears” horse race across Patagonia.

Thousands of kilometres driven, flown, and boated. Hundreds of heart rates and trot ups completed. Dozens of steaks and asados eaten. Several bottles of Malbec consumed. Multiple friends made and old ones reconnected.

Putting boots on the ground agin in Patagonia felt like coming home. Watching the Argentine horses perform and help riders overcome the adversity of the Southern Argentina was a real treat. Ensuring that the health and welfare of the steads were maintained in one of the most remote parts of the world with the veterinary team was a career highlight.

Until we meet again Patagonia, I’ll be day dreaming of the mountains - albeit cursing the bogs.

Meet Libby Prins @libbyprins 🇬🇧

Libby has spent over 10 years working as a field producer and director on natural history documentaries, often in remote and challenging environments across Africa.

She brings over 20 years of wilderness medical training and experience managing logistics and communications in remote environments, and previously coordinated tracking for two Ngalawa sailing races along the East African coast.

A lifelong rider with a deep love for horses and wild places, she is in charge of tracking and communications during the race.
