This or That with Diana Brien!

It was a total career highlight to visit Gregory Hills Public School last term. Mrs Brien sure knows how to roll out the red carpet for authors. And we LOVE it! What a legend. Terrific to meet all the students too, of course - plenty of Fox Kid fans.

Thanks Mrs Brien. And thanks for the encouragement to dress up like a truly serious author would. 🤣

You may have heard that last week. The Catholic Schools diocese of Newcastle – Maitland plan to discontinue the role of teacher librarians in 2027.

This is not the only area where teacher librarians are disappearing. Their role has been devalued and minimised even though the evidence and the research shouts from the rooftops that having a library and a librarian as the heart of your school encourages a culture of reading, curiosity, learning, and increases the levels of well-being across the school community.

It is a false economy to discontinue the role of the teacher librarian in any school when the aim of that school is to encourage a love of learning, resilience, and to forster a sense of joy and well-being.

If you feel strongly about this please consider signing the petition that is asking all governments across Australia mandate teacher librarians in Australian school schools.

@mncatholicschools have announced that ‘in order to improve student outcomes’ the role of the teacher-librarian will be discontinued in their schools from 2027. A teacher-librarian could effortlessly highlight to their students the use of weasel words and contradiction in this statement.

I was educated at a Catholic primary school. I would not have the career I have today without the nurturing foundation of literacy and creativity provided by teacher-librarians.

Over the last 10 years as a children’s Author-illustrator I have witnessed firsthand the critical work of teacher-librarians at public, private and religious schools across Australia.

Eradicating teacher librarians from schools is a contemptuous act of educational neglect and shortsightedness. It short-changes the literacy needs of a generation of children.

If you feel as strongly about this decision as the entire Australian children’s writing community, you may like to courteously email Jacqueline Wilson, Director of Schools on info@mn.catholic.edu.au or contact the local member Tim Crakanthorpe: newcastle@parliament.nsw.gov.au.

Better still contact your local news outlet to voice your response to this decision.

Behind every great Book Week is a passionate teacher librarian who brings stories to life.
Year after year, it’s educators like @library_learninghub Diana who remind us that Book Week is about so much more than dressing up. It’s about creating excitement around reading, introducing children to unforgettable characters, and showing that books have the power to spark imagination.

From Thelma the Unicorn to Gangsta Granny, from a magical Dragon Girls character to the lovable Cranky Crab, every costume has been thoughtfully chosen to celebrate a different story and inspire young readers to pick up a book.
It’s clear that this teacher librarian doesn’t just share books she lives them. Every costume is another opportunity to connect with students, start conversations and create memories that children will remember long after Book Week is over.
To all the amazing teacher librarians, school librarians and library staff... thank you. Your enthusiasm, creativity and love of books inspire the next generation of readers every single day.

Which of these costumes is your favourite?

Tag @bookweekcostumes in your Book Week photos. I love celebrating the incredible teachers, librarians and families who make Book Week such a magical time of year!

The professional discussion on genrefication, featuring @library_learninghub @emilytlwilliams @kathy.wyber and facilitated by @krisddarell sparked thoughtful conversation, diverse perspectives, and valuable professional insights from across the school library sector.

While approaches and contexts may differ, one message came through loud and clear: every decision about library collections should be guided by what best serves the needs of students and the wider school community 🙌
