On Friday May 1st, our studio will be participating in the national day of action to show our support for workers’ rights. We invite you to join our community for the following events:

FREE 10:30a - 11:45a Hatha Yoga with Meghan

FREE 12p - 1p Townhall Style Discussion with Meghan and Krista about May Day

1:30p Rally at South Park Blocks

3:30p March at South Park Blocks

**Normal classes will be canceled from 12p on Friday, May 1st to participate**

May Day History
In 1884, US organized labor unions demanded an eight-hour workday to begin on May 1, 1886. This led to widespread strikes across the U.S.

This year, organizers for labor and workers’ rights are calling for No Work, No School, No Shopping to highlight the growing disparity between the working and billionaire classes.

Free Yoga and Community Discussion
In solidarity with workers’ rights, The Practice Space will offer:
a free Haṭha yoga class from 10:30-11:45 a.m. led by Meghan
a townhall style discussion from 12-1p hosted by Krista and Meghan. This discussion will highlight the history of May Day and why its significance matters today. We will also discuss what a general strike entails and practical steps we can take to prepare for a larger national strike.

Why We Choose to Participate
We feel called to participate in the national day of action on May 1st because we aim to promote agency. When full-time workers cannot meet their basic needs their agency is limited. This restriction limits choices, reduces mental bandwidth due to increased stress, and constrains access to opportunities. Furthermore, the ethics of yoga are at the forefront of our decision making. Policies which reward the most privileged while harming the most vulnerable populations directly conflict with The Practice Space’s mission to promote physical autonomy and emotional resilience.

No sugar coating, this work isn’t for the faint of heart. But we do it so we can impact our world and the world beyond.

With gratitude,
The Practice Space Team

Prāṇa was given a prominent position in the early yoga texts as it was seen to be the force that energized all the faculties within the human body. Prāṇa via the breath was considered to be a direct bridge to the unchanging unified field of consciousness underlying all existence.

This unified substratum of reality was known as Brahman. As a unifying principle, it was surmised that the unchanging basis of reality must also exist within the human being and was called the inner self or ātman.

The scholar Robert Luyster suggests that “this principle of ultimate unity, finally, since it constituted the true reality of all phenomena, must constitute the true and inner reality also of man; and since the fundamental reality supporting man’s life had from pre philosophical times been identified with the breath, the presence of Brahman in man was naturally localized within his prāṇa (breath) or ātman.”

The ātman was often conceived of as the internalized sun residing within the heart (hṛdaya). Luyster notes moments in the texts which suggest that the arteries that surround the heart were thought to be a material connection to the rays of the sun; “when one proceeds through the arteries toward the heart, he also obtains the light of the sun.”

The external sun became the symbol of universal consciousness of which prāṇa was the active principle. The rays of the sun were thought to be rays of prāṇa.

We enter into our body and onto this planet through our individual breath. When our time comes to an end, we depart with our final exhale.

Every breath in between is shared in relationship with others and our environment. The value of a vision of the breath as both individual, as well as shared is that it recognizes the unique story of each individual, yet the shared breath reminds us that we coexist with the world around us.

For this very reason, the breath holds the potential to acknowledge both multiplicity and commonality, origin and apotheosis.

The importance of the breath has been obscured in much of the modern approach to yoga, but we can revitalize its role one conscious breath at a time.

Accessibility is at the heart of what we do. That’s why it’s our mission to meet students where they’re at, providing specific containers for deeper study and FREE community classes open to everyone!

In this all levels mat class we will use the magic circle, a wonderful prop designed by Joseph Pilates himself, to find deeper activation and connection to our muscles, as well as better support and end range mobility than possible without it.

Pre-registration is required through Mindbody Online. Registration closes 24 hours before class. Drop-in attendance is not permitted for free classes.

Dear Community Members,

For the past three months, a group of 24 Buddhist monks from the Hương Đạo Vipassana Bhavana Center in Fort Worth, TX have been walking with their dog, Aloka, 3700 km from Texas to Washington D.C. This long distance pilgrimage known as the Walk for Peace, was started by the monks to promote peace, compassion and non-violence in the US and throughout the world. They have been walking in frigid cold, some even going barefoot, to simply offer this act of kindness, generosity and inspiration. On Tuesday, their 108th day of walking, they will finally arrive in the nation’s capital.

This Wednesday, February 11th, the monks will engage in a three hour loving kindness meditation that will be livestreamed around the world on Facebook. They are hoping to have millions of people join them in collectively praying and meditating for peace. Think of that - millions of people together at the same time, focused on peace. That is true power (and power exists for transformation not dominance nor oppression).

We lovingly invite you to participate in this event with us. In solidarity with the monks and their mission, @thepracticespace_pdx will offer our studio as a location for you to come and meditate together in community.

Please come to the studio this Wednesday, any time between 1:30 - 4:30 pm.

You can join us for 3 minutes or 3 hours.
We will stream the broadcast and offer meditation spaces for all who wish to participate.

No need to register - just show up whenever you can and stay as long as you wish.

If you are unable to make it to the studio on Wednesday, please consider joining the meditation from wherever you are through the Facebook stream: https://www.facebook.com/share/g/1D6zJBRDvt/, and please invite everyone you know to do so as well.

Thank you.
With love and strength,
Anne Witmer @yoginiannepdx and The Practice Space Family
