Free Community Class
w/ @lil.pilates
Saturday, February 21
3-4 pm

Accessibility is at the heart of what we do. That’s why it’s our mission to meet students where they’re at, providing specific containers for deeper study and FREE community classes open to everyone!

In this all levels mat class we will use the magic circle, a wonderful prop designed by Joseph Pilates himself, to find deeper activation and connection to our muscles, as well as better support and end range mobility than possible without it.

Pre-registration is required through Mindbody Online. Registration closes 24 hours before class. Drop-in attendance is not permitted for free classes. taken in The Practice Space by @lil.pilates

For years I’ve used Pilates to keep my inner right knee pain manageable, but it always comes back…

In the interest of longevity on my bike, I wanted to get to the cause of my pain. A simple standing posture assessment with my colleagues drew awareness to the pronation (dropped arch) in my right foot and resulting internal rotation of my right knee. This simple assessment led to months of discovering just how incredibly cramped, immobile and dysfunctional my feet are at the moment, likely from a lifetime in shoes that were too sturdy, too tall of a heel and too small.

For lasting change I’ve:
* transitioned to wide toe box, zero drop, minimalist shoes (walking and biking) @vivobarefoot @xeroshoes and @lemsshoes
* worn @correcttoes everyday (short spurts)
* started doing the foot exercises in @nutritiousmovement “Simple Steps to Foot Pain Relief” daily

It’s been pretty amazing to feel the transformation in my feet and the difference I feel grounding my feet on my pedals (and ground) with these lifestyle and movement changes. My muscle engagement and alignment up my entire leg feels different and while I’m not 100% pain free I’m excited to see if these changes can get me closer to that goal.

Mobilizing the spine is incredibly important (barring injury or pathologies that may require eliminating some movements). Learning to stabilize the spine is equally as important! A lot of the time when we think our spines are stable in an exercise or activity they are actually moving. Sometimes the spine moving may help us feel like we are “doing more” by going bigger with our movements but often we are simply unaware the spine (or pelvis) are moving at all when we move our arms or legs.
.
Learning to use props for feedback so that you can truly stabilize your spine will help maintain spinal elongation and decompression and actually create greater mobility where you’re lacking (shoulders/hips for example). You’ll find this series and others like it in my eBook’s Pilates mat class “Stabilize Your Spine.”

Cycling posture (paired with all the sitting we do) leads to a pretty immobile thoracic spine. The overball is probably my favorite tool to help mobilize the spine in ALL directions to help prepare for spinal extension which counters the hyperkyphosis (overly rounded upper back) that can develop over time on the bike.
.
These moves also strengthen your abdominals in their end range mobility (hello burn!). You’ll find this series in my eBook’s Pilates mat class “Move Your Spine.”

I’m so excited to finally launch my first ever eBook, Pilates for Cycling: Abdominal Strength and Support!

This eBook is meant to compliment your biking practice regardless of your Pilates experience. You’ll learn:
• anatomy and function of abdominal and supporting muscles!
• to build abdominal strength through both spinal mobilization and stabilization with 3 PILATES MAT CLASSES!
• how to transfer your learning from the eBook and Pilates mat classes to your bike!

It is my hope that this curated collection of information and exercises will help keep you on your bike by building strength AND countering the postural imbalances/repetitive actions created or perpetuated by cycling.

We woke up at 3:30a for a 3 hour drive to hike Grinnell Glacier. We even saw a bear (on the drive) and some moose!

My weekly cycle commute log looks different based on tons of factors:
• can I work remotely that day?
• when’s my first/last client of the day?
• do I work on the weekend?
• how does my right knee feel?
• does my husband need the car?
• how far is my ride?
• do I feel like cycling?!
.
I used to be hard on myself if I drove even one day during the week. I thought I’d break the habit for good if I missed too many (or even one) days. I didn’t want to be seen as a “fair weather cyclist”. I wanted to save money and the environment. But this non-negotiable relationship with cycling wasn’t sustainable for me, so it changed. Most weeks I still bike more than I don’t, but giving myself permission to drive simply because I WANT to has made a big difference for me and my longevity on the bike!

What a journey! I remember at the very beginning of quarantine researching “how to do a headstand” and everyone trying to sell me on doing it in a matter of weeks. Well, 1.5 years later I did it! I didn’t rush, I never hurt myself and I feel really proud that I did this on my own, with the guidance of some amazing friends here on IG (thank you!)

Probably 95% of the cycling I do is commuting to and from work, which is usually about 45 miles per week. It can get repetitive so exploring Oregon wine country a few weeks back with @ekennethm was a real treat! And yes… we did also drink wine… we shared a tasting flight 😵‍💫😂
.
Thank you @visitmcminnville for the cycling route, I can’t wait to come back and try another one!
