🐶🥕 Thinking of transitioning your dog to fresh food?

Whether you’re introducing a fresh topper, switching to a commercially prepared fresh diet or
making the move to homemade meals, a gradual transition is usually the best place to start!

Here’s a simple guide:

🐾 Days 1 - 2: 25% new food + 75% current food
🐾 Days 3 - 4: 50% new food + 50% current food
🐾 Days 5 - 6: 75% new food + 25% current food
🐾 Day 7 - 10 onwards: 100% new food

These proportions refer to the share of daily calories, rather than equal weights or volumes of
food.

💩 Watch their stools! If you notice digestive upset, slow down the transition.

Some dogs, particularly those with sensitive gastrointestinal tracts, may need 10 - 14 days or even longer.

That is fine.

⚖ Check the calories. Fresh food often has a much higher moisture content than kibble, so you can’t swap gram for gram.

🥩 Don’t forget nutritional balance. If homemade food is replacing a substantial portion of the diet, it needs to provide all the essential nutrients your dog requires.

And remember, fresh feeding doesn’t have to be all or nothing! Even introducing a small amount of fresh food as a topper can be a way to add variety to your dog’s meals.

Have you transitioned your dog to fresh food? How did they go? 👇

On the Tuesday 22 September, we were alerted to the news that 76 dogs from a single property needed rescue support.

Three days later, we began the intake of 40 of those dogs.

Fast forward 3 weeks and 5 days and here we are with 33 dogs - some ready to go to their forever homes, and others still a little way to go 💫

This is what 40 dogs in care including 8 x puppies looks like...

✂️ 26 desexes (15 girls / 18 boys) - 5 desexes to go
🦷 28 dentals - 91 teeth removed - 5 dentals to go
🥩🥦 250kg of fresh food
🗂️ 33 dogs have been chipped, registered
💉30 dogs vaxxed (mums can’t be vaxxed yet)
🎾🎾 2-3 boys had undescended testicles - a genetic predisposition

🐶🐶🐶 3 foster fails
🐾🐾 2 adoptions

And now it’s time for you to meet all our poodles 😍

Here’s what we’re doing to support this beautiful boy’s journey to adoption.

Being a boy with big emotions, Team Mason has been deployed to help him on his journey to his forever family. Mason is the last in the “new beginnings” litter to find his forever family and we’re working through his big emotions to teach him how to manage his response to triggers (new people, cars, wildlife).

In our toolkit:
- grounding stations (a bucket or small box)
- a long line
- high value treats
- a stooge person (me)

Working just on his street with everyday triggers.

From a behavioural perspective, Mason is supported by medication working in conjunction with a fear free training plan 🫶 Any medications should always be used in conjunction with a behavioural modification strategy which includes behaviour and training support.

Thanks to Team Mason;
Demi @pillarofpaws
Jenny @problemsonpaws
Dr Prue @parkes_street_vet
And his amazing foster carers @jacquipisano & Alex

Watch Part 2 as we introduce me (a new person) to him 🙏

A big thank you to Emma from @snax.for.dogs for allowing us to use her great space today. I did have a chat to Pedro later about peeing on the ball pit and in return Pedro he had a chat to me about only buying one bag of treats. So I guess we are even.

How do we work out how much weight an overweight dog should lose?

⚖️ Step 1: Estimate their ideal body weight

Using the 9-point Body Condition Score (BCS) system, each point above 5 represents approximately 10% excess body weight.

Vito started at 34.7 kg with a BCS of 8/9, meaning he’s approximately 30% overweight!

34.7 kg ÷ 1.3 = 26.7 kg estimated ideal weight

🎯 Step 2: Set a realistic goal

Our initial goal weight doesn’t necessarily need to be the ideal weight. For significantly overweight dogs, even modest weight loss can improve mobility, reduce joint loading and benefit overall health.

Setting smaller, achievable milestones can make long-term weight management more manageable and rewarding 🧡

🥕 Step 3: Calculate calories

We estimate the maintenance energy requirement (MER) for the dog’s ideal body weight and use approximately 80% of this as a starting calorie allowance.

📉 Step 4: Aim for gradual weight loss

For dogs, we generally aim for 1 - 2% of their starting body weight per week.

For Vito, that’s around 350 - 700 g per week.

Losing weight too quickly can increase the risk of losing muscle alongside fat, so a gradual, sustainable approach is important, particularly for senior dogs.

📊 Step 5: Monitor and adjust

Weigh every 1 - 2 weeks and adjust calorie intake as needed to achieve the desired rate of weight loss.

Vito is currently enjoying a combination of Lyka and homemade meals, with his intake carefully managed to support healthy weight loss.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on his progress and cheering him on! 🥳

Stay tuned for updates on Vito’s journey! 🐾

Also, please keep in mind that weight-loss plans should be individualised with veterinary guidance, particularly for senior dogs or those with other health conditions. Thanks Dr Becca 💖 @vng_pets

ADOPTABLES | 🖤 MOOSE 🖤

Meet Moose! This handsome 2 yo boy is ready to find his forever home. 🤍

Moose is a clever, fun-loving Border Collie who is still discovering the world, and he’s having a ball doing it. He is very food driven, which makes training a breeze. He picks things up super fast!

He absolutely loves a run, and a beach run is his idea of heaven. 🏖️ Moose needs a family who can keep up with him and who understands what a smart, active Border Collie needs to be happy.

Moose is great with other dogs, so a doggie companion to show him the ropes would be perfect. He isn’t a big fan of being alone, so he’ll do best with people who are home more often than not and keen to take him along on adventures.
