Throw back to 2007 in Bakersfield, CA. It’s summer time and I’m Keying my first movie with Kris Kachikis called American Son. I was fortunate to have these two amazing Teachers by my side, Alex Skvorzov and Lila Byall. In this photo she’s reloading our Panavision Gold with another 1000’ mag. TRUE STORY, Kris shot mostly handheld, 11 minute takes to be exact. He shrunk so much that we had to hang him upside down over the weekends. @kachikis @lila74 @alexskvorzov #setlife #shootfılm #americanson #bamgripinc #bamgrip

It was a pleasure to work on an Amazon campaign with dir. Phil Joanou last month in L.A., & a revelation to work with someone so enthusiastic, organized & experienced. It was our first time working together as Dir. & DP, but I’d actually been on set with him three times before. I moved to NYC in 1989 & was trying to figure out how to get into the film business & woke up one night with lights shining through the windows of my apartment on the Upper West Side. I spent that night sitting out on a curb watching the legendary cinematographer Jordan Cronenweth light Phil’s classic film “State of Grace” starring Sean Penn & Gary Oldman. In 1992, I got hired to work as Phil’s Dolly Grip on the music video for “One” by U2. I worked on that shoot for almost 22 hours & when we wrapped at daybreak, the management team had forgotten to get together money as they had promised to pay the crew in cash. When the crew found this out, I remember someone shouted “run to the truck and get the negative!” U2‘s manager, Paul McGuinness, jumped up on the bar & said “hold on, it’s Saturday morning, we’re on tour, jet-lagged, things got mixed up & the banks are still closed. Here’s the deal, the bar is open, the band is staying & you’re all on triple golden time until the money arrives!” I remember having a conversation with Bono & wishing I had a cool black leather jacket just like him. The next day, flush with the cash from the music video, I went out & bought a Schott’s motorcycle jacket & remember thinking “NYC is the greatest place in the world!” Years later, I was the gaffer for acclaimed cinematographer, Harris Savides, on a music video he & Phil were making for The Complexions, a band on the soundtrack for Robert DeNiro’s movie “A Bronx Tale.” Harris had a giant metal salad bowl looking thing in the back of his pickup truck. “I was just in Houston & they blew up the Astrodome, & this is a shell of a light that was in the parking lot. Can you make it work?” I fitted it with a 250 watt bulb & a dimmer, & Harris said “that’s great, put all the “real” lights on the truck. I’ll hold the camera, you hold the light and we’ll make the whole music video this way.” Life is so rich.
